Fractions are used when we need to find portions of something. Fractions are used in daily life such as cooking, telling time and counting money. When first beginning to work with fractions an appropriate definition would be A/B or "A out of B." When more complex concepts come into play our definition may have to be more thorough.
Fraction Definitions
Numerator- The top number of the fraction. Comes from the word number, the number of parts.
Denominator- The bottom number of the fraction. Tells us what type it is.
Whole- The unit amount.
Proper Fraction- The numerator is smaller than the denominator.
Improper Fraction- A fraction that is greater than or equal to 1.
Teaching fractions is a concept that requires finding a method that works for the individual student. Technology is a great tool and well as hand on methods. Legos can be used as a visual for fractions, especially when first introducing them. Using food as a representation such as cake or pizza will help students make a realistic connection.

Fractions can be a really difficualt concept for some students. It's hard to wrap you head around the fact that 1/4 is the same as 25/100 and also 2/8. It can become over whemling and before you know it students have given up on themselves. The most important job that you have as a teacher is making sure your students see that they can do it.
