Divisibility Tests- A method to check if a counting number is divisible by another counting number without actually doing the division.
The Divisibility Test For 2
To see if a number is divisible by 2 or not you need to look in the ones place. If the number is odd: 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 then the number is not divisible by 2. If the the number in the ones place is even: 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 then the number is divisible by 2.
To see if a number is divisible by 3 or not take the counting numbers digits and add them up. If that number is divisible by 3 then the original counting number is also divisible by 3. For example: 21,642 Start by adding 2+1+6+4+2=15. Then see if 15 is divisible by 3. It is, 15/3= 5. We now know that 21,642 is divisible by 3 in only a minute and without a calculator!
The Divisibility Test For 3 and 9
The Divisibility Test For 4
To see if a number is divisible by 4 you look at the last 2 digits of the number. If those 2 numbers are divisible by 4 then the original counting number is as well. For example if you took 42,816 you would look at the last 2 numbers 16. You can divide 16 by 4 so 42,816 is divisible by 4. (10,704)
The Divisibility Test For 5
To see if a number is divisible by 5 check the ones digit. If the ones digit is a 0 or a 5 then the original number is divisible by 5. If it is not a 0 or a 5 then is it not divisible by 5.
To see if a number is divisible by 10 look at the ones place. If the number in the ones place is a 0 then the number is divisible by 10.
The Divisibility Test For 10
A divisibility test is a quick way to check and see if a number can be divided by another. Learning these divisibility tests will improve time and accuracy. Less mistakes should be made among students once theyve mastered the rules and feel comfortable with them. A simple chart in the classroom could help erase any confusion amongst the tests themselves. I do believe that the tests help boost confidence levels and is a great tool for the classroom.
