Rounding makes working with numbers easier. The number has is around the same value but not exact.

The approximately equal sign is used when two numbers are close to each other but not exactly the same. For example 9.99999 is approximately 10.
Locate the given place value. All digits to the left of that place value do not change.
Underline the digit to the right of the given place value.
Determine if this digit is greater than or equal to
Yes—add 1 to the digit in the given place value.
No—do not change the digit in the given place value.
Replace all digits to the right of the given place value with zeros.
One way I would help my students learn rounding is visually with number lines and the mountain technique. Zooming out and using tick marks as hundreds is exceptionally helpful when learning.

Using real world problems in the classroom is a goal of mine. Rounding with money is something students with have to do throughout life so working on problems involving that as well as other types of math such as multiplication to help build connections will be a common occurrence.
