For the past 21 years our school district has offered a Pre-teach Physical Education class to children at our older first to second grade building ( previously housed at Sangamon school )to students who received either physical therapy or occupational therapy. Prior to the initiation of this class, therapists provided individual sessions with students in the therapy room to individually work on motor skills that the student needed to be successful in the PE setting. If any adaptations or extra practice were required this information was then communicated to the PE teacher and staff working with the student. The need for a consolidated program became apparent as the student skills looked different with a full class of peers and in the gym setting.
MPE and Lincoln Trail
Pre-teach PE is a 25-30 minutes class of no more than 10 students that is instructed by the PE teacher with direct support by various staff members such as Special Education Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist staff and Physical Therapist. The staff collaborate to adapt, modify and pre-teach the student's the motor skills needed for the upcoming PE unit. Incorporating verbal directions with fewer students, extra practice or adapting activities needed for the PE curriculum in order to meet the student’s skill levels has been very successful at increasing student's participation in full sized PE classes. Due to its success, staff and gym availability it began being implemented at offered Middletown Prairie Elementary in 2012 and Lincoln Trail in 2013.
Pre teach Encore MPE: In the 2018-19 school year a trial Pre-teach Encore was implemented after it's success with pre-teach PE., which had been first implemented in 2006 at the old Sangamon school. Due to the trial year's success it was implemented in the 19-20 school year and will include pre-teach whole body health and wellness, our new 5th encore class. The pre-teach encore classes runs on the same basis as pre-teach PE being a 25-30 minute class with a class size of approximately 8 students ( or less as it varies each year) that is instructed by the Encore teachers. Direct support by various staff members such as Special Education Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Occupational therapy assistants and Physical Therapist. The staff collaborate to adapt, modify and pre-teach the student's skills needed for the upcoming unit. Incorporating verbal directions with fewer students, extra practice or adapting activities needed for the curriculum in order to meet the student’s skill levels has been very successful at increasing student's participation in full sized classes. Each Encore class is involved in the pre-teach one time every five weeks due to the five encore classes. The students meet weekly but rotate throughout the Encore classes.
Preteach Encore LT: At Lincoln Trail in the year 21-22 Pre-teach Encore was implemented with the four Encore classes of PE, Music, Art and STEAM.
