Tier III: Individualized

Tier III supports are individualized, intensive interventions designed for students with persistent, high-intensity behavioral needs who have not responded to Tier I and Tier II supports. These supports are aligned with Tier I expectations and systems to ensure consistency and continuity for the student across all environments.

Effective Tier III systems include:

  • Supports developed through a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) that identifies the purpose or function of the behavior

  • A Positive Behavior Intervention Plan (PBIP) that includes:

    • Prevention strategies

    • Skill replacement teaching

    • Reinforcement plans

    • Clear, respectful responses to behavior

  • Data-driven, team-based problem solving with ongoing progress monitoring 

  • Wraparound supports when needed (e.g., mental health services, community partnerships)
