Tier I: Universal Supports

Tier 1 systems, data, and practices serve as the foundation for supporting all students, in all settings, across all tiers of instruction. These proactive supports aim to prevent challenging behavior by creating a consistent, safe, and inclusive school environment.

At the heart of Tier 1 is the establishment of clearly defined, positively stated, and culturally responsive expectations. These expectations create a shared language among staff and students and guide behavior across all school environments.

Tier 1 also emphasizes the explicit teaching, modeling, and positive reinforcement of prosocial behaviors. Success depends on consistent implementation by all adults and regular use of data to monitor effectiveness and guide decision-making.

Foundational Components

  • Leadership team who meets regularly

  • Tier 1 team to analyze building processes

  • Establishment of Schoolwide Positive Expectations to drive common language amongst adults and students

  • Procedures for Establishing Classroom Expectations and Routines across all school settings through a Behavioral Matrix

  • Behavioral flowchart outlining proactive and reactive responses to expected and unexpected student behaviors

  • Continuum for recognizing and encouraging expected behavior linked to school expectations

  • Ongoing implementation and reflection of the 8 Effective Practices

  • Teaching prosocial behaviors as well as behavioral expectations and routines

  • Ongoing data collection to monitor effectiveness and continuous improvement

  • Ongoing reflection of professional development and onboarding for all staff

OUTLINING AND TEACHING CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS AND PROCEDURES

Students need structure and familiarity as they continue to learn.  Classroom routines and procedures give students a predictable day as they know what to expect and feel more confident and secure in their daily activities.  Remember you need to TEACH and REINFORCE your procedures and expectations throughout the year in order for it to be successful.
