The goal is to respond to problem behavior in a way that is safe, predictable, and consistent. These responses help build trust, preserve relationships, and contribute to a positive school climate. Staff are encouraged to shift their perspective by asking, “What might this child be experiencing?” and “What is their behavior trying to communicate?”
Just like an iceberg, behavior is often the visible part of a much larger picture. Beneath the surface, there may be emotional, social, or environmental factors influencing what we see. Responding with curiosity and compassion allows us to better support the whole child.
BUILDING OUR UNDERSTANDING
SELF REGULATION AND CO-REGULATION

Self-regulation is the ability to manage behavior, feelings, and thoughts to meet situational demands. It involves noticing your reactions, interpreting others’ behaviors, and using strategies to stay calm.
Co-regulation is when a caring adult supports a child’s self-regulation development by bringing calm to chaos. Be present, stay calm, pause, breathe, listen, and be mindful of your responses. Model, instruct, provide practice opportunities, and reinforce effort to coach self-regulation skills.
SUPPORTING CO-REGULATION
Co-regulation is crucial in crises and can be scaffolded throughout the day. Self-regulation skills develop through practice and daily experiences. By creating regular opportunities, students can apply strategies, learn from mistakes, build confidence, and foster trust through safe connections with adults.
