ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Mrs. Catherine Witt, the Upchurch 2023-24 Artist in Residence, is continuing to teach students the art of mosaics. She is working with 1-3 homeroom classes every Wednesday until November 15, ensuring that each homeroom gets a chance to participate. If you are at Upchurch, take a moment to admire the students' artwork on display in the front cabinets.

We're pleased to share that this project is made possible through the support of the Nebraska Arts Council, with contributions from the State of Nebraska and the National Endowment for the Arts. To catch a glimpse of the mosaic-making process with Mrs. Witt, check out the video.

4TH GRADE HAL MICROBIOLOGY

The Upchurch 4th Grade HAL Students learned about microbiology through a presentation by the Nebraska Extension Service.  They swabbed various surfaces in the school that might harbor unseen microbes and grew their specimens in petri dishes.  The next week, they examined their petri dishes to find out what they had collected.  Their big take away was that it is important to wash hands, desks, and other surfaces.

5TH GRADE HAL FORENSIC SCIENCE WORKSHOP

The Upchurch 5th Grade HAL students went on a field trip to Metropolitan Community College on Friday, October 27 to take part in a Forensic  Science Workshop.  They learned about DNA and how it is collected and analyzed.  They also collected fingerprints from bottles using the tools Crime Scene Investigators would use and took turns taking and examining one another's fingerprints.

5TH GRADE HAL PUZZLE ME THIS WORKSHOP

The Upchurch 5th Grade HAL students were challenged with many different puzzles, including dot puzzles, pencil puzzles, and purchased thinking games in a workshop titled "Puzzle Me This" presented by ESU #3.  They really had to think outside the box to solve some of the puzzles.  The students attending came away with puzzle booklets to continue the challenge on their own.
