3RD GRADE HAL FIELD TRIP

The Upchurch 3rd Grade HAL students enjoyed learning about Meteorology at the MCC North Express Campus with Science on a Sphere.  Some of the activities that they participated in to get some hands-on ideas of how and why weather happens included creating a barometer; making a cloud wheel to help identify clouds; and using a yardstick, protractor, and flashlight to imitate how the sun's position in relationship to the earth affects how it warms the earth.  Check out the pictures from Science on a Sphere!

4TH GRADE HAL: BRIDGE PROJECT

The 4th Grade HAL students have been learning about the construction of bridges with the Nebraska  4-H Extension Office.  They learned about different truss structures and how they help distribute the load.  Then, they built bridges out of K'Nex sticks to see how using different trusses could affect the load the bridges could carry.  As a final project, the students created their own bridges out of popscicle sticks, calculated how much each bridge would cost to build if each popscicle stick were a beam costing $1,500 each and each partial stick cost half of that.  This week, those bridges were brought to the school and tested to see how much load they could handle.  The bridges, their estimated costs, and the amount of load they could handle are on display in the front hallway through Parent Teacher Conferences.

5TH GRADE HAL: DNA WORKSHOP

The 5th Grade HAL students learned about DNA through a Nebraska 4-H Extension Service seminar.  They build the double helix and extracted DNA from a strawberry.  Check out these pictures from that seminar!

THANK YOU

Hello all this is Mr. Polinko, the School Counselor, and I want to say a special thank you to all the 1st grade students, the 1st grade teachers, other kind students, and the parents who made for such a special School Counselor Appreciation Week. Thank you so much for all the popcorn, beautiful drawings, the kind words, and amazing treats. I am deeply grateful from the bottom of my heart and I cannot thank you all enough. It is an honor to get to serve such amazing, kind, and caring students every day and that caring and kindness starts at home, thank you so much.
