The Schlenk line is an essential inert atmosphere purification technology leveraged across Monash's sensitive pharmaceutical chemistry research projects. This specialised vacuum manifold and purification system enables air- and moisture-sensitive reactions by scavenging and using inert gases like argon or nitrogen. With multiple ports accepting glassware apparatus fitted with specialised stopcocks, the Schlenk line allows target atmospheres to be established before reaction while also facilitating inert gas purification of solvents and reagents, crucial to the success of organometallic and catalysis experiments. During intermediate purging cycles, the integrated vacuum pump removes oxygen or moisture contamination traces. The Schlenk line facilitates students’ cutting-edge research into novel APIs, chiral catalysts, potent drug conjugates and other air-sensitive targets at the core of modern drug discovery and development by enabling strict control over atmospheric conditions critical for reaction reproducibility.
