Simple View of Reading At-a-Glance:
The Simple View formula presented by Gough and Tunmer in 1986 is:
Decoding (D) x Language Comprehension (LC) = Reading Comprehension (RC)
A formula comprised of two basic components:
word recognition (decoding)
language comprehension.
The formula, as well as research, shows that a student’s reading comprehension (RC) score can be predicted if decoding (D) skills and language comprehension (LC) abilities are known.
Reading Comprehension is achieved when you have both:
Word Recognition
Language Comprehension
Word Recognition Skills:
Phonological Awareness
Decoding
Sight Recognition of familiar words
When these skills work together the reader becomes accurate, fluent, and automatic with repetition and practice.
Language Comprehension Skills:
Background Knowledge
Vocabulary
Language Structures
Verbal Reasoning
Language Structure
When these skills work together the reader develops comprehension of the language.
