Examination Rules and Regulations for School-based Examinations


A. Examination Requirements

  1. This set of Rules and Regulations shall apply to all students who are sitting for any examinations held within the school premises.

  2. The examination timetable shall be strictly adhered to unless otherwise stated by the Assessment Committee. Invigilators shall commence and end the examination based on the stipulated timing in the examination timetable.

  3. Each student shall bring his/her own stationery, dictionary/e-dictionary and mathematical instruments (e.g. calculators, set-squares, compasses, protractors and rulers etc) for the relevant examination papers or science practical examination as these will not be supplied. During the examination, borrowing of stationery, calculators or any other materials is not allowed.

  4. Students are not allowed to have in their possession any unauthorised electronic, communication, smart or computerised devices within the examination premises (e.g., examination venue, quarantine room, waiting room). Examples of unauthorised devices include computerised devices (e.g. iPad), communication devices (e.g. mobile phone, smart watch) and other electronic devices (e.g. camera, storage device). Students are also not allowed to have in their possession any unauthorised materials (e.g. notes, books, writing papers). Should any of these items be found in a student’s possession during the examination, it will be deemed as a dishonest act.

  5. When the use of dictionaries or texts is permitted in the examination, students must ensure that only approved dictionaries or texts are brought into the examination room. These dictionaries or texts must be free from any notes or marginal annotation. Separate pieces of papers, such as post-its and tape flags are not allowed. No critical works, teachers’ notes, study notes, or any other ‘secondary material’ of any kind should be brought into the examination room.

  6. No student should leave the examination venue before the scheduled end time. Please note that marks will be counted once students have attempted the paper.

  7. When a student is absent from an examination due to illness, he/she must produce a medical certificate from a qualified medical practitioner immediately upon his/her return to school.

  8. Students who are absent without a valid reason will be awarded a zero mark.



B. Prior to Examination

  1. All students shall be seated at their assigned desks at least ten minutes before the commencement of the examination. No student is allowed to take the examination if he/she is more than half an hour late from the start time of the paper and/or from the reporting time for practical papers. If any student is late, he/she must report to the General Office to collect the Late-coming form before reporting to the examination venue.

  2. Students shall not exhibit improper conduct or misbehaviour during the examination. Examples include disturbing other students, disobeying instructions from examination personnel.

  3. Students are to place their textbooks, notes, bags and personal belongings that may give them unfair assistance at the front or back of the examination room or as instructed by the invigilators. Only stationery or other items required for the examination papers can be placed on the desk.

  4. Students shall not communicate or attempt to communicate with other students / unauthorised person(s) during the examination, or during any other occasions when communication is strictly prohibited. For example, when question papers are distributed, answer scripts are being collected, or during movement to the quarantine area.

  5. Students shall inform the invigilator immediately if:

(a) they are issued a question paper they have not entered for;

(b) they are issued a question paper that does not contain the number of pages or questions specified on the cover page;

(c) they are issued a question paper not scheduled to take place at that time; or

(d) they are not issued supplementary materials (e.g. graph paper, map or drawing paper) stated in the question paper.


C. During the Examination

  1. Students shall not leave the examination venue, quarantine or holding room unescorted or without permission from the examination personnel.

  2. Student shall not flip open or turn over the question paper until they are instructed to do so.

  3. Students shall not use correction fluid or tape.

  4. Students shall raise their hands if they need to communicate with the invigilator.

  5. Students shall not remove any examination material(s) and stationery from the examination venue without permission.

  6. Students shall stop writing/working on their answers and close the answer booklet (if applicable) immediately when the invigilator makes the announcement to end the examination. Students are to remain seated quietly while their answer scripts are being collected and counted.

  7. If a student is caught cheating, indulging in an unfair practice or dishonest act, all his/her completed answer scripts will be removed from him/her and he/she will not be allowed to continue sitting for the paper. Students who are caught cheating will be given a zero mark for the paper. Acts of malpractice and dishonesty include but are not limited to:

(a) attempts to obtain unfair assistance or is detected for dishonesty;

(b) copying from another student or allows his/her answers to be copied by another student;

(c) possession of books, notes, memoranda or any other reference materials not authorised for use in the examination;

(d) possession of electronic devices (e.g. pocket PC, PDA), communication devices (e.g. pagers, mobile phones) and computerised aids (e.g. computerized wrist-watches) capable of storing and displaying visual and verbal information prohibited in the examination/quarantine room;

(e) the inclusion of offensive or obscene material in scripts or assessments; or

(f) removal of any used or unused writing paper from the examination venue.


D. After the Examination

  1. Students are allowed to leave the school after their last paper for the day has ended, unless otherwise stated in the examination timetable.
