SCHOOL HISTORY

Yusof Ishak Secondary School was established in 1965 as Jubilee Integrated Secondary School. It was an integrated school offering secondary education to students of two streams, in English and Malay. The school was then renamed after Mr Yusof Bin Ishak, the First President of the Republic of Singapore who is respected as a statesman, scholar as well as a sportsman. The school, then located along Jubilee Road, was declared open by Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the founding Prime Minister of Singapore on 29 July 1966.

We are honoured to be named after the first President of Singapore, Mr Yusof Bin Ishak. His life was governed by service and sacrifice for his countrymen. He was a wholesome person with a purpose and a clear vision. He was selfless in contributing his best to his country. He was responsible, resilient, respectful, confident, compassionate and was anchored with integrity of character – qualities which Yusoffians embrace and look up to.

Over the past 56 years, the school has endeavoured to enhance the school environment to provide an all-rounded education for Yusoffians. The school was one of the forerunners in the use of information technology, having opened a computer lab as early as 1992. With a focus on enhancing student well-being and designing suitable instructional programmes to raise student achievement, the school was the first in Singapore to top the value-added ranking in both the Express and Normal Streams in 1992. The school continued to hold the record of being one of the top 10 value-added schools in Singapore for the next 4 years.

In tandem with the school’s improved and value-added academic performances, the intake at YISS outgrew the campus at Jubilee Road. After 35 years at the original Jubilee Road campus, Yusof Ishak Secondary School moved to its new location at Bukit Batok Street 25. The symbolic move took place on 14 Nov 1998. On that morning, the staff and students walked 7 km from Jubilee Road to its Bukit Batok campus. The school building was officially opened on 29 July 2000 by Dr Ong Chit Chung, Member of Parliament, Bukit Timah GRC.

With changing demographics at Bukit Batok and growing demand in Punggol, Yusof Ishak Secondary School was relocated to its current campus at 8 Sumang Walk and took in their first batch of Secondary 1 students in January 2022.

Beyond the first 50 years, Yusof Ishak Secondary School is forging ahead with new partnerships to pave the way for many more years of nurturing growth and development of ladies and gentlemen of The First President School. In 2015, the Centre for Teaching & Learning Excellence (CTLE) was launched by then Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat, becoming the first school in Singapore with such an honour. The CTLE is a unique tripartite partnership between our school, Master Teachers (MTTs) from the Academy of Singapore Teachers (AST), and experts from the National Institute of Education (NIE).
