The theme of Pre-University Seminar 2022 is ‘Service: Forging the Singapore Story’ and is valuable in contributing to the participants’ understanding of how the stories of various Singaporeans past and present, humble and visionary, stem from a true sense of service to their community, to the nation, and/or to some greater or nobler ideal. The Singapore Story itself is both inspired by and a synthesis of a number of core narratives, which themselves stem from expressions of values.
The narrative of harmony is about our efforts to stay as one united people. In a multicultural and diverse society where there are competing interests and needs, harmony is a core value that underpins beliefs and behaviours that seek common ground. In the face of challenges confronting modern societies worldwide, harmony built on mutual respect, civility and trust is essential in bolstering our social fabric.
The narrative of kindness speaks of Singaporeans’ capacity for generosity and selfless concern for the well-being of others. It seeks to encourage many helping hands to create a more inclusive Singapore and strengthen our social compact. Acts of kindness, big and small, remind us of how the nation was built: with the gotong royong spirit of caring and being responsible for each other.
The narrative of resilience is an integral part of our history; it describes our determination and will in our days of nation-building, and our ability to weather the challenges of current times. Rooted in the values of tenacity and courage, it undergirds our practices and how we sustain ourselves, reminding us that while small, Singapore can punch above our weight and remain unique and relevant.
The narrative of innovation is how the Singapore Story looks to the future, valuing creativity and continuously seeking improvement and advancement. It represents those who imagine and see new possibilities, are bold in taking calculated risks, and work to position Singapore strategically as an innovation hub.
