Strategy 3: Reward System

Objective:

Temporary strategy to encourage reluctant student in completing school work and demonstrating appropriate behaviors.

Create a list of rewards based on the students’ preferences
Rewards may vary in significance – earn more stars for bigger rewards
List down the expected behaviors that students will earn rewards or incentives for
- Display the list in a place where everyone can see them
Consider small incentives without all the formality of a system
- Snacks, stationery
- Verbal affirmations, High-fives, call parents to share on positive behaviour
- Use “Hall of Fame” to acknowledge efforts of students
- Allow student to perform special tasks (e.g. hand out worksheets, collect workbooks from classmates)
Use Classroom Reward Chart . Reward entire class when goal is met (e.g. watch a video)
Verbally praise students whenever good actions are observed
- Either quietly or in front of the class
Positive notes sent home for demonstrating good behavior and meeting expectations
Track each student’s progress toward rewards through a chart
- Behavioral Monitoring Chart
- Reward students who earn enough points for a given reward or incentive
- Reward at the end of each day or week – students select incentive from list of rewards

Note

When using rewards, always consider:

- Using simple reward that can be easily obtained in school setting
- Seek student's view in determining reward - increases student ownership in the process.
- If possible, engage parents to jointly agree on a choice of reward for the child.
