The student practices the reading and spelling of words from word families that have similar pronunciation and shared spelling patterns (rimes).
Preparation
1. Select four single-syllable word families with shared rime (e.g. -ack / -ail / -ain / -ake)
2. Generate a list of up to five words from each of the four selected word-families to review with the student
(e.g. -ack : pack, lack, tack, sack)
3. Make flashcards of the 20 selected spelling words – with the initial consonant(s) of the word written in
black and the rime of the word written in red ink
4. Prepare templates

Intervention Steps
1. Reading – Have The Students Read The Words Aloud.
· Ensure that flashcards of the same word family are grouped together.
· Show the student each flashcard for 5 seconds and ask the student to read it aloud.
· For every word read correctly, acknowledge the response and move to the next card.
· For words that are read incorrectly, read out the correct word and have the student repeat it aloud
before moving on to the next card.
· Continue the above steps until all flashcards have been attempted once.
2. Writing – Have The Student Spell The Words.

· Ensure that flashcards of the same word family are grouped together.
· Read each word from the flashcard aloud but do not show the card to the student.
· Instruct the student to write the word.
· Then, immediately show the student the correct spelling on the flashcard and ask the student to state
whether his or her spelling is written correctly.
· For words spelled correctly, move on to the next word.
· For words spelled incorrectly, instruct students to cross out the incorrect spelling and copy the correct
spelling from the flashcard under the Self-correction column. Then move on the next spelling word.
· Continue the above steps until all flashcards have been attempted once.
3. Record Correct Student Responses

· While conducting this intervention, record each word that the student reads and spells correctly. Note
the date of the correct response.
4. Continue With The Current List Until Mastery
· Continue using the current wordlist in successive sessions until the student can respond without error
on both reading and spelling tasks for all 20 words.
· Then, select new word families and generate a new wordlist.
