Intervention Steps
1. Give the Spelling Pre-test
· Select five spelling words and instruct the student to spell them out.
· Use the Spelling Sheet: write down the words in the Pre-test Section.
2. Get Student to Check Work and Correct Error Spelling Words
· After the pre-test, give the student a set of flashcards with the correct spelling words.
· Instruct the student to check his work from the pre-test using the flashcards. Put a tick to each word
that is spelled correctly.
· For words spelled incorrectly:
a. Re-read the correct words as it appears on the flashcard.
b. With a coloured pen, circle the letters that are written wrongly in the incorrect word.
c. Turn the flashcard over to hide the correct word.
d. Recall the correct spelling of the word and write it down under the Student Self-Correction
section of the Spelling Sheet.
e. Compare the written word to the flashcard and check if it is correct.
f. Circles with coloured pen those letters within the correctly written word that were originally in
error but have now been fixed.
g. Looks at the letters circled in coloured pen both in the original error word and in the corrected
spelling of the same word and tells self, "This is the part of the word that I need to remember".
h. Repeats steps (a) to (g) above, using the second of the two 'Student Self-Correction' blanks
provided.
3. Give the Spelling Post-test
· Instruct the student to put the spelling flashcards aside temporarily.
· Then, re-administer the five spelling words as a post-test.
· First, fold the Spelling Sheet at the dotted line to hide the pre-test words then write the words into the
'Post-Test' section.
· Using the flashcards, get the student to score the post-test.
