Getting Familiar With Your Personal Learning Device
You will be using your PLD frequently for your day-to-day learning. It is therefore important for you to be familiar with the key features of your PLD. This will allow you to maximise the device’s affordances and better facilitate your learning within school or at home.
The table below contains a series of guides for you to get you started and be familiar with your PLD. A checklist is also provided for your self-assessment.
Securing your PLD
This is your personal responsibility for your own device.
Remember to also screen lock your device.
Make use of your personal locker to safekeep your PLD when not in use.
How to set up offline mode on your Chromebook
The flexibility to use your PLD in the offline mode.
This allow you to create, view and edit Docs, Sheets and Slides even when they are not connected to the Internet.
Offline Mode
Work on Google Docs, Sheets, & Slides offline
If you aren't connected to the internet, you can still create, view, and edit files on:
Google Docs
Google Sheets
Google Slides
Use Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides offline
You can save the most recently opened documents on your computer.
Before you turn on offline access
You must be connected to the internet.
You must use the Google Chrome browser.
Don't use private browsing.
Install and turn on Google Docs Offline Chrome extension.
Make sure you have enough available space on your device to save your files.
How to turn on offline access
Open Google Drive.
At the top right, click Settings (cogwheel icon) > Settings.
Turn on Offline setting.
To work offline, in your Chrome browser, open Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
Tip:
If you want to use offline access for another Google Account, make sure you're signed in to the right Chrome profile. Learn how to switch Chrome profiles.
You can also turn on offline access from Docs, Sheets, or Slides settings. If you turn on offline access for Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Drive, then the rest will also be available offline.
Alternatively, to turn on offline access, open any Google document, spreadsheet, or presentation, and click See document status (Cloud icon) and then Turn on > Turn on.
Turn off offline access
Open Google Docs.
Click Menu > Settings.
On the right, turn off Offline.
Make specific files available offline
If you have enough storage, some of your most recent files will be automatically saved offline. To manually select files to save offline:
Follow the steps above to turn on offline access in Google Drive.
On the file you want to use offline, click More More.
Click Available offline. A check mark will appear in the bottom left corner to show that the file is available offline.
Tip: You can also make a file available offline by opening a Google document, spreadsheet, or presentation, and clicking File > Make available offline.
Check if a document is ready for offline use
Tip: If your document is not ready to edit offline, an explanation will appear.
Powering up and down your PLD
Your PLD will automatically be connected to pdlp@SSOE network.
Depending on the brand and model of your device, the power button will be at different location.
Power on - Press & release the Power button
