Cassie and Lily had been best friends since they were toddlers, but lately, their friendship had been tested. Cassie had started hanging out with a group of popular girls, and Lily felt left out. She didn't like the way they talked about other people or the way they made fun of her for not wearing the latest fashion trends. But Cassie was too busy trying to fit in to notice.
One day, Lily was over at Cassie's house, and they were talking about their summer plans. Cassie had mentioned that she was going to a party with her new friends, and Lily felt a pang of jealousy. She wanted to be invited too, but she didn't think she would fit in.
As they sat on Cassie's bed, Cassie pulled out a small, pink notebook and handed it to Lily. "I wrote down everything that happened last night," she whispered.
Lily's eyes widened as she read through the pages. Cassie had snuck out of her house and gone to a party with some older kids, and she had done things that were definitely not allowed. Lily was shocked, but also a little bit excited. She had never been to a party before, let alone one with teenagers.
"I can't believe you did all of that," Lily whispered, handing the notebook back to Cassie. "Did anyone find out?"
Cassie shook her head. "No, but I feel terrible about it. I don't want to lie to my parents anymore."
Lily nodded sympathetically. "I know, but you can't tell them about this. They'll be really mad at me."
Cassie sighed. "I know. But I feel like I have to tell someone. That's why I told you."
Lily put a hand on Cassie's shoulder. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. We'll keep this our little secret."
Keeping the secret was harder than Lily thought. She felt like she was carrying a heavy burden, and she did not know how much longer she could keep it up. Then, things got even more complicated. One day, Cassie's parents found out that she had been sneaking out at night. They grounded her and took away her phone, and Cassie was devastated. She could not talk to her new friends, and she felt like she was back to being an outsider.
Lily knew that she had to do something to help her friend, but she also knew that she could not tell anyone about the party. So she came up with a plan. She invited Cassie over to her house for a sleepover, and they spent the night talking and laughing like they used to. They made homemade pizzas and watched movies, and for a little while, Cassie forgot about her problems.
It was not a perfect solution, but it was a start. Lily knew that she had to be there for Cassie, even when things got tough. And she also knew that sometimes, keeping a secret meant taking on a heavy burden. But with her best friend by her side, Lily was ready for anything.
