Show up for all your scheduled shifts over the course of the semester (including finals week). If you cannot work a shift, let your supervisor know as soon as possible. We can adjust your work schedule with notice.
Always arrive on time for your shifts. We expect everyone to be on time for work, according to the agreed upon schedule they set with staff. If you are running late, email ddc-student-supervisors@mit.edu or call (617) 253-5690 as early as possible to notify staff. If you can't make a shift due to illness, please notify ddc-student-supervisors@mit.edu. We ask that you keep us informed as soon as you can about schedule changes.
When entering and exiting the DDC, use the staff / service door, not the reading room door. Ring the bell and wait for the door to be opened or buzzed unlocked by a DDC staff member, usually the person sitting at the reference desk. DDC doors open in from the corridor. Student workers are not permitted to admit anyone into DDC areas.
When you arrive sign in at the reference desk, and have the time initialed by a member of the staff. Assistants without assigned spaces may use a locker in the reading room to lock up their personal belongings and valuables. Food should be stored in the refrigerator or on the counter above, if in a sealed container.
Your supervisor will consult with you each day about work to be done. You should check in with your supervisor at the beginning and end of your shift so that they are aware of when you arrived and left. Ask questions as they arise.
Submit your time sheet online by noon on Friday every week so that we can make sure you are paid promptly for the hours you've worked. Timesheets are to be filled out to the nearest quarter hour, marking time in and out for a lunch break. Contingent workers who work more than 6 consecutive hours must take a 30-minute unpaid meal break. Your break may be taken outside of the DDC. MITemps should receive a manual from NextSource with information about how to report time. Student workers will report time using Atlas. (View instructions for entering time in Atlas)
Dress is neat, casual, or business casual. Layers are recommended because temperatures vary and fluctuate in the DDC spaces. Closed toe shoes are also recommended when moving boxes and carts. You may be asked to do physical tasks, such as push carts and lift boxes, or work with materials or in spaces that are dusty and not completely clean.
