Follow guidelines and policies for assistants. We're laying out our expectations for you while you're on the job in this document. Familiarize yourself with these guidelines and follow them.
And finally, Ask questions! We are aware that there is much to learn and absorb regarding your new role as an employee of Distinctive Collections. Please don't hesitate to contact your supervisor or other staff with any questions you have. We're here to help!
A regular paycheck. Student employees are paid weekly for the hours you work.
A relatively low stress work environment. We do our best to maintain an environment where it is possible for you to have flexibility in your scheduling while still making sure work is completed.
Staff who care! We are committed to our mission of providing access to our collections to the MIT Community, and your role here is critically important to that aim. Our staff are here to help you do your best both as an employee of the library and as a student and researcher here at the Institute.
Recommendations! We are happy to provide recommendations for student staff to future employers, scholarship boards, and the FBI for security clearances. Please be aware that your performance here will affect the recommendation that we can honestly give.
At the end of each semester, we have the option to rehire or not hire you for the next semester, including the summer. Top priority in rehire decisions will be given to those students who are dependable and display good job performance. Students may receive raises for each additional semester worked. Remember that good work gets noticed and rewarded accordingly.
Failure to meet stated expectations may lead to disciplinary action, such as reduction of hours or termination. You will receive a verbal warning prior to initial disciplinary action. If, following initial disciplinary action, you continue to not meet expectations, your position may be terminated.
Inappropriate behavior or ethical violations will be considered grounds for immediate dismissal.
