Interactive Vocabulary
Cells: the smallest living part of an organism
Circulatory System: moves blood throughout the body; delivers nutrients and oxygen to all cells, removes carbon dioxide and wastes from cells, helps fight disease
Digestive System: breaks food down into nutrients; gets rid of solid wastes from digestion
Endocrine System: a messaging system that sends chemical messages throughout the body through the blood stream
Immune System: protects and fights against infection and disease
Integumentary System: outer covering (skin) that protects organs and tissue
Muscular System: causes parts of your body to move
Nervous System: controls all the body’s activities, receives information about the environment, stores memories, and allows you to think
Organ system: a group of organs that work together to perform a certain function in an organism
Organs: a group of different tissues that work together to perform a certain function in an organism
Reproductive System: male and female sex cells in the process of making more organisms of the same kind
Respiratory System: takes in air (oxygen) and gets rid of waste gases (carbon dioxide)
Skeletal System: functions include supporting the body and giving it its shape; protecting internal organs; allowing movement; storing substances, such as calcium; and making red blood cells
Tissue: a group of cells that work together to perform a certain function in an organism
Urinary System: removes waste from the body
Animals: a living organism that feeds on organic matter, typically having specialized sense organs and nervous system and able to respond rapidly to stimuli.
Function: the specific role or activity that a particular animal or group of animals performs within the social structure
Hierarchical: atoms, molecules, organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and finally, the organism itself
Organism: an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form.
Plants: a living thing that grows in soil or water and has leaves and roots
What human body systems provide structure, movement, and control?
Mini Lessons
the group of organs that work together to break down foods into substances that your cells can use.
the group of organs and tissues that carry needed materials to cells and remove their waste products.
the organ system consisting of the skin, hair, nails, and exocrine glands.
the organs that supply your blood with oxygen.
the body organs that filter your blood, removing waste and excess water.
a combination of body defenses made up of the cells, tissues, and organs that fight pathogens in the body.
body system that contains bones as well as other structures that connect and protect the bones and that support other functions in the body.
the body system that uses tissues that are responsible for providing movement and temperature regulation.
the system of glands throughout the body that regulate body functions.
the body organs and structures that make it possible to produce offspring.
the part of an organism that gathers, processes, and responds to information.
7.13: Organisms and environments. The student knows how systems are organized and function to support the health of an organism and how traits are inherited. The student is expected to:
7.13.A: identify and model the main functions of the systems of the human organism, including the circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, muscular, digestive, urinary, reproductive, integumentary, nervous, immune, and endocrine systems;
7.13.B: describe the hierarchical organization of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems within plants and animals;
