Interactive Vocabulary
Average Speed: total distance an object traveled by the total time it has traveled
Displacement: how far an object has moved from its original position; the difference between the final and initial positions
Motion: an object changes its position
Speed: the distance an object moves per unit of time, such as miles per hour
Velocity: speed in a direction
Acceleration: the rate of change of velocity per unit of time.
Cardinal Directions: north, east, south, and west
Constant Speed: when an object moves at a steady rate, without increasing or decreasing in speed
Decreasing: becoming smaller or fewer in size, amount, intensity, or degree
Displacement: the moving of something from its place or position.
Distance: the total movement of an object without any regard to direction
Distance-time graphs: determine the position of an object at any point during the given time interval
Increasing: becoming greater in size, amount, or degree; growing.
Linear motion: a change in position from one point to another in a straight line in one dimension
Position: a place where someone or something is located or has been put.
Stationary: to stop moving or to remain in one place
Time: the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a whole.
Units of measurement: a definite magnitude of a quantity
Mini Lessons
calculating average speed using distance and time measurements.
distinguish between speed and velocity in linear motion in terms of distance, displacement, and direction.
measure, record, and interpret an object's motion using distance-time graphs
7.7: Force, motion, and energy. The student describes the cause-and-effect relationship between force and motion. The student is expected to:
7.7.A: calculate average speed using distance and time measurements from investigations;
7.7.B: distinguish between speed and velocity in linear motion in terms of distance, displacement, and direction;
7.7.C: measure, record, and interpret an object's motion using distance-time graphs; and
