INTERNSHIPS

An internship is a directed, practical learning experience, outside of the normal classroom setting.  Students sharpen skills, gain experience through structured and monitored work-based learning experiences, and have the opportunity to network with industry professionals. Students apply academic concepts, master instructional objectives in a professional setting, and gain valuable experience in the workplace.

An internship may be required for students in certain career programs. Internship is open and available to all interested students. Interested students should contact the internship coordinator for more information regarding available opportunities.

When Can Students Enroll for Internships?

Internships are available during both semesters and are usually completed during a student's senior year. Students may register for triple, double, or single period internships depending on the expected number of hours students will work. MCPS expects 75 hours per period of internship each semester.

What Is Expected Of An Intern?

Interns will be working in a professional setting and are expected to act professionally. The intern is expected to be punctual, work hard, act responsibly, maintain confidentiality, and to dress appropriately throughout the internship experience. When determining an internship program, a prospective intern needs to evaluate his/her strengths and talents, interests and goals that can be offered to a prospective employer through a professional resume. Placement procedures vary for each internship program. Students must clarify with the coordinator the established policies and procedures before any search begins. Final approval of the site rests with the Internship Coordinator.
