MACTC Apprenticeship Competition and Carpenters Union Open House 

Friday, May 17th | 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

This competition will showcase the best-trained, highly skilled Union Carpenter apprentices in an all-day competition where we will celebrate the best-of-the-best at the awards ceremony at the conclusion of the day. You are welcome to attend any portion of the day you would like to attend; lunch will be provided and refreshments will be available throughout the day so that everyone can see firsthand what it means to be a union apprentice. Come to watch the competition, and stay to learn about the amazing careers in construction available today. In addition, there will be booths available for students and adult cohorts to apply into the various apprenticeships and career paths in construction as well as hands-on activities where individuals will be able to see if a career in construction is right for you.

But there’s a lot of research showing “learning styles” are actually a bust, and categorizing your kid won’t improve their ability to learn (or their test scores!). Author and Educator Ann Dolin, M.Ed., will discuss peeling away the labels to better help kids absorb and understand the material. She will be joined by Education Specialist, Anne-Stuart Kirkhorn. Internships with Global Lawyers for Refugees Info Session

Wednesday, January 17th, 1:00 p.m.

Global Lawyers for Refugees (GLR) is an innovative collaboration of lawyers from leading international law firms, world class companies and prominent refugee rights advocates from across the globe providing refugees fleeing religious persecution with direct legal services and policy support. Selected GLR interns will have the opportunity to assist experienced human rights and refugee rights attorneys working on one or more of the GLR workstreams: welcoming new refugees and their families to the U.S. by building a sponsorship group to help support them; working with government officials and representatives in the U.S. and abroad to get support for refugees; bringing awareness to the plight of individual prisoners of conscience in order to help advance their cases and their cause; collaborating with law firms and businesses to provide support for refugees and prisoners of conscience; and writing and using/collaborating with various media outlets to get the word out about the plight of refugees and prisoners of conscience.

There is a College for Everyone: Tips for Finding the "Right Fit"...Even When Grades are Average

Thursday, January 18th | 7:00 p.m.

With over 2,000 four-year colleges in the US, a “right fit” school is waiting to welcome your student. Topics will include: how recent changes in college admission impact students with “average” grades and test scores; the strategy your student needs to highlight their interests and accomplishments in essays and applications to really set themselves apart from the competition; why GPAs and test scores hold greater weight at certain schools and the meaning behind acceptance rates; and how to find less competitive colleges that have the exact environment (including services for students with IEPs and 504s) and areas of study your teen needs to be happy and successful.
