It is essential that students in the Senior School, especially those commencing the VCE, plan carefully and make informed decisions that enable them to fulfil both academic and personal goals.
The best advice is to choose studies:
which the student enjoys;
in which the student achieves success;
that the student may need for future study (prerequisites) or work;
which maintain and develop the student’s special skills and talents.
Each student should ensure that they are fully informed before making decisions about their course of study.
McKinnon Secondary College has an excellent record of success at the VCE level.
The teaching staff are committed to assisting students to achieve success.
Some qualities required from the students:
A desire to do one’s best;
A commitment to their studies;
Determination and perseverance when things become difficult;
Dedication to their studies and academic achievement; and
Discipline both at school and at home.
These qualities are necessary to meet the challenges of the final years of secondary schooling and allow students to succeed.
Students need to establish sound work habits and learn to set priorities for their commitments at school and at home.
McKinnon Secondary College aims to encourage all its senior students to invest effort and time into achieving success and doing their best.
Although the senior years are challenging, we hope our students will also find them enjoyable and some of the most memorable of their school years.
VCE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Your VCE Program is the complete list of VCE units you do over two years to three years. To meet the graduation requirements of the VCE, each student must satisfactorily complete a total of no fewer than 16 units. A unit is one semester in duration.
These units must include:
At least three units of the common study of English (Units 1, 2, 3 & 4) or English as an Additional Language (Units 1, 2, 3 & 4); and
Three sequences of Units 3 & 4 studies other than English.
VCE STUDIES OFFERED AT McKINNON SECONDARY COLLEGE are listed on the Year 11 and Year 12 course structure pages.
NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
English or English as an Additional Language is compulsory for all students. The units listed on the course structures page are offered and every effort will be made to accommodate students’ choices but final programs will depend on timetabling constraints and on the number of students choosing particular units.
Other languages may be taken outside the school. If you decide to do this, you must INFORM us of this decision, as this must be entered on the VASS system.
If a unit is taught at McKinnon Secondary College, students will be expected to enrol in that unit at this college and NOT with another provider.
Students in Year 11 must undertake at least 5 subjects offered at the College, and Year 12 it is 4 subjects offered at the College.
