Year 11 Dance NCEA Level 1
In this practical course students will learn about a range of different dance genre, the elements of dance and dance vocabularies. Students will develop skills in performing, choreographing and responding to a range of dance types, both historical and contemporary. They will extend personal movement skills knowledge and prepare and present their dances, with an awareness of the reasons for their performance. Students will participate in a number of public performances over the year, showcasing their knowledge of a range of dance types.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Y10 Dance or instruction from outside school. Students without this experience will be required to attend a small number of after school dance workshops in Term 1 to catch up on missed learning from Year 10.
Recoveries: $25 to help cover the cost of material for performance costumes over the year.
Year 12 Dance NCEA Level 2
In this practical course students will continue to develop skills in performance and composition of dance sequences, both individually and in groups. They will perform a range of dance genres and communicate their understanding of the style through their performance. There will be extension of personal movement skills knowledge and students will prepare and present their dances, with greater awareness of the reasons for their performance. Students will participate in a number of public performances over the year, showcasing their knowledge of a range of dance genres.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Year 11 Dance or instruction from outside school.
Recoveries: $25 to help cover the cost of material for performance costumes over the year.
Year 13 Dance NCEA Level 3
In this practical course students will continue to develop skills in performance and composition of dance sequences for an intended purpose, both individually and in groups. Students will explore and discuss how dance is different when performed as a solo, duet or a group, and choreograph dance pieces appropriately. They will choreograph and perform a repertoire of musical theatre dances and communicate their understanding of the style through their performance. There will be extension of personal movement skills knowledge through investigation, learning of dances, guest tutors and visits to workshops and performances. Students will prepare and present their dances, with greater awareness of the reasons for their performance. Students will participate in a number of public performances over the year, showcasing their knowledge of a range of dance types.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Year 11 and Year 12 Dance or instruction from outside school.
Recoveries: $25 to help cover the cost of material for performance costumes over the year.
Pathways: Dance is an approved subject for University Entrance. Dance is a core component of Performing Arts Studies at University and is also integral to studies of human movement within the Bachelor of Physical Education at the University of Otago. Students can study Dance as a major focus of both Arts and Science degrees. Students who study Dance can also find opportunities in education and the theatre, film and entertainment industries.
Year 11 Drama NCEA Level 1
This course builds Drama skills through performance. Students will learn about Drama elements, techniques, technologies and conventions along with different theatre types and performance styles. Students will be involved in devising their own performance, studying a theatre form or type and performing in a play in our purpose built mini theatre. Students will be encouraged to see at least one live professional theatre performance as part of their exam preparation and to extend their own knowledge of theatre. They will also be involved in practical workshops with professionals where possible. Course content and assessment opportunities are confirmed in consultation with students at the beginning of the year to meet the needs and interests of the individuals.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Year 10 Drama, drama instruction outside of school, or Curriculum Leader approval and a willingness to participate and learn.
Recoveries: Approximately $30 to cover travel and entrance fees to live professional theatre performances - will vary depending on location and ticket price.
Year 12 Drama NCEA Level 2
This course develops the skills gained in Level 1 Drama and is performance based. Students will extend their drama skills, knowledge of theatre theories and performance, and apply this understanding to their own performances. They will devise their own drama, interpret scripts for performance, study a theatre form and perform a significant role in a class play in our purpose built mini theatre. Students will be encouraged to see at least one live professional theatre performance as part of their exam preparation and to extend their own knowledge of theatre. They will also be involved in practical workshops with professionals where possible. Course content and assessment opportunities are confirmed in consultation with students at the beginning of the year to meet the needs and interests of the individuals.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Level 1 Drama or Curriculum Leader approval and Level 1 Literacy
Recoveries: Approximately $30 to cover travel and entrance fees to live professional theatre performances - will vary depending on location and ticket price.
Year 13 Drama NCEA Level 3
This course extends the skills gained in Level 2 Drama and is performance based. Students will devise their own original drama, perform individually and in groups and will be involved in performing a significant play in our purpose built mini theatre to a live audience. There may be opportunities for students to explore the skills involved in writing scripts and directing performances. They will be encouraged to attend live professional theatre as part of their exam preparation and to extend their own understanding of theatre. They will also be involved in practical workshops with theatre professionals where possible. Course content and assessment opportunities are confirmed in consultation with students at the beginning of the year to meet the needs and interests of the individuals.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Level 2 Drama course or Curriculum Leader approval.

Pathways: Drama is an approved subject for University Entrance. Students who study Drama can continue their study at tertiary institutions in Theatre Arts, Performance Arts Studies and Theatre and Film Studies. The study of Drama can lead to work in the theatre, film and entertainment industries. It also provides skills that are beneficial in many areas of study such as Law, Education, History and other Humanities subjects.
Year 11 Music NCEA Level 1
This course includes solo and group performance, composition, aural and theory skills and you may also develop skills on demonstrating knowledge of two music works from contrasting contexts. Music technology is integral to the course and involves gaining skills in music editing, composing and recording software. There will be some flexibility within the course to allow for students to choose which areas of music they wish to specialise in and to follow that path, this direction and selection of standards will be decided upon in consultation with the teacher. Students will also be given opportunities to attend relevant workshops, camps and festivals.
Prerequisites: To take the NCEA Level 1 music course the student must have successfully completed Year 10 music or have been taking private/itinerant lessons for at least 2 years
Recoveries: $15 towards the costs of sheet music, maintenance and CDs/DVDs for recording.
There may be additional costs for workshops. camps etc.
Year 12 Music NCEA Level 2
This course offers students the opportunity to study in greater depth the skills and conventions of performance, composition, instrumentation, aural and theory skills and musical knowledge. There will be some flexibility within the course to allow for students to choose which areas of music they wish to specialise in and to follow that path, this direction and selection of standards will be decided upon in consultation with the teacher. Students will also be given opportunities to attend relevant workshops, camps and festivals.
Prerequisites: To take the NCEA Level 2 music course the student must have success fully completed Year 11 music or have been taking private/itinerant lessons for at least 3 years

Year 13 Music NCEA Level 3
This course continues on from the Level 2 course with an emphasis on extended performance, substantial composition and arrangement or music research. Students have the opportunity to explore these conventions in real depth through a mixture of relevant achievement standards from two domains: Making Music and Music Studies. Students will have the opportunities to perform in school and community events. Students will also be given opportunities to attend relevant workshops, camps and festivals.
Prerequisites: To take the NCEA Level 3 music course the student must have successfully completed Year 12 music or have been taking private/itinerant lessons for at least 4 years.
Recoveries: $15 towards the costs of sheet music, maintenance and CDs/DVDs for recording. There may be additional costs for workshops, camps etc.
Year 11 Performing Arts Technology NCEA Level 1
This course balances theory and practical application of Performing Arts Technologies. Students will learn about stage lighting, sound, costume, make up and props. They will then design, construct and carry out these skills in a practical way supported by a record of their learning. Students will be able to demonstrate these skills in real life situations through the Performing Arts here at the school and in the wider community. They may be involved in technical roles for a number of events such as senior drama, dance and music productions as well as special events like Stage Challenge. Students will be involved in practical workshops with professionals where possible.
Pre-requisite: The course is open to all Year 11 students.
Year 12/13 Performing Arts Technology NCEA Level 2
This course develops and extends the skills and knowledge gained in Level 1 PAT. Students will explore in greater depth the theory and application of technologies used in the Performing Arts. These include costume, set design and construction, stage lighting, sound, make-up and production responsibilities. Assessments will include sector related standards that can lead to a Vocational Pathways Award within the Creative Industries Pathway while also preparing them for opportunities within the industry.
Prerequisite: This course is open to all Year 12 students. Preference will be given to students who have already successfully completed Level 1 PAT or Drama, Dance or Music courses.
Year 13 Performing Arts Technology NCEA Level 3
This course extends the skills and knowledge gained in Level 2 PAT. Students will learn about enhancement processes and technologies for both stage lighting and sound applications. They will develop knowledge and skills valued in the creative industry focussing on creativity, production and design methods to expand on their practical knowledge gained in previous years. Students are also encouraged to take leadership of production roles such as Stage Manager in school or community based performances.
Pre-requisite: The course is open to all Level 3 students who have already successfully completed the Level 1 and/or Level 2 courses.
Pathways: Performing Arts Technology can lead to studies at tertiary institutions and gives excellent preparation for study at the national drama school, Toi Whakaari. Options for study are in Creative Technologies, Media Organisation, Theatre Studies, Theatre Management, Directorships, Theatre Technicians, a Bachelor in Design, a Diploma in Performance Technologies. It also provides a base for employment in the film and entertainment industry.
Year 11-13 Visual Arts courses are optional. At all levels the learning programmes follow the achievement objectives of the Visual Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum. These include students:
• Researching artist model influences and contexts
• Developing conceptual ideas for art works
• Using traditional and contemporary techniques to produce art works
The focus for all Visual Arts courses is to enable students to develop effective and confident visual art skills and to produce original art works.
Hannah Coleman-Smith year 12 Painting
Year 11 Visual Arts NCEA Level 1
This course is intended for students who are interested in developing their drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and mixed media skills. Level 1 Visual Arts prepares students for all Year 12 NCEA Level 2 Practical Art courses and in particular, Painting. This course is highly practical, with observational and design drawing, digital drawing and painting using Adobe Photoshop, printmaking, sculpture, painting and mixed media components. Students can choose to complete two internal achievement standards and one external achievement standard (presented on a two panel folio).
Prerequisite: None, but completion of Y10 Visual Arts is an advantage

Year 11 Photography-Design NCEA Level 1
This course is intended for students who are interested in developing their photography and design skills. This course aims to prepare students for Year 12 NCEA Practical Art-Photography and Practical Art-Design. It includes design drawing, model making, digital photography, processing and design using Adobe Photoshop, macro photography and staged photography. Students can choose to complete three internal achievement standards and one external achievement standard (presented on a two panel folio).
Prerequisite: None, but completion of Year 10 Visual Arts is an advantage
Recoveries: $50.00 plus a $50 bond if Visual Arts Department cameras are being borrowed overnight. The bond money will be used to help cover any repair costs if a camera is returned damaged. This bond will be reimbursed at the end of the course if no camera damage has occurred.
Note: At NCEA levels 2 and 3, it is entirely appropriate for students to take two Visual Arts courses e.g. Painting and Photography or Photography and Design, if desired.
Year 12 Practical Art-Painting NCEA Level 2
This course is intended for students who have coped well with NCEA Level 1 Visual Arts or who can demonstrate an interest or background in visual arts. It requires some research but is highly practical. Practical components may include observational and compositional drawing, use of Adobe Photoshop, digital painting, painting, photography, collage, mixed media and printmaking techniques. Students choose their own theme and subject matter to base their art works on. They are encouraged to research imagery and develop their own conceptual ideas to produce original art works. Students can choose to complete up to 3 internal achievement standards and the external achievement standard (presented on a two panel folio).
Prerequisite: 12 NCEA Level 1 credits in Visual Arts or by approval of the Curriculum Leader, Visual Arts

Year 12 Practical Art - Photography NCEA Level 2
This course is intended for students who have an interest in photography, who may wish to continue on with NCEA Level 3 Photography. It includes analogue (traditional film, camera and darkroom skills) and digital photography. Some research is required but the course is highly practical. Practical components include setting up photo shoots, taking photographs, making contact sheets and prints, processing images and using Adobe Photoshop. After completing the first two internal achievement standards (which have a portrait theme), students choose their own theme and subject matter to base their photography on. They are encouraged to develop their own visual ideas and use special effects to manipulate imagery. Students can choose to complete up to 3 internal achievement standards and the external achievement standard (presented on a two panel folio).
Prerequisite: 12 NCEA Level 1 credits in Visual Arts or by approval of the Curriculum Leader, Visual Arts.
Use of a 35mm SLR camera is needed to participate in this course, but this may be borrowed from the Visual Arts Department.

Year 12 Practical Art - Design NCEA Level 2
This course is intended for students who have an interest in Design, who may wish to continue on with NCEA Level 3 Design. Students learn the design process and how to process images using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and In Design. They also use hand drawing, collage, model making, digital photography, scanning and printmaking to produce design work. The course includes two and three dimensional design. Students produce work on the design theme of their choice e.g. fashion, product, graphic design and illustration. They can choose to complete 2 internal achievement standards and the external achievement standard (presented on a two panel folio).
Prerequisite: None, but Level 1 NCEA Visual Arts and/or DVC is an advantage.

Year 13 Practical Art: Painting NCEA Level 3
This course is intended for students who have coped well with NCEA Level 2 Practical Art - Painting and those who want to pursue an interest in painting. This course prepares students for tertiary Creative Technology, Design, Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Architecture, Animation and Media Arts courses. Some research is required but the course is highly practical. Practical components include drawing and painting, using Adobe Photoshop, photography, painting, mixed media and printmaking techniques. Students choose their own theme and subject matter to base their art works on. They are encouraged to visually research and develop their own conceptual ideas to produce original art works. Students can choose to complete up to 4 internal achievement standards and/or the external achievement standard (presented on a three panel folio).

This course is intended for students who have coped well with NCEA Level 2 Design and those who have an interest in design. It prepares students for tertiary Creative Technology, Media Arts, Animation, Visual Arts, Architecture and Design courses. It includes research, hand drawing, model making and computer generated design techniques and two and three dimensional design. Students produce work on the theme and design briefs of their choice. They can choose to complete up to 3 internal achievement standards and the external achievement standard (presented on a three panel folio).
Prerequisite: 12 NCEA Level 2 Credits in Practical Art or by the approval of Curriculum Leader, Visual Arts
Recoveries: $60.00 – To cover printing costs and quality paper
Pathways: Practical Art Painting, Photography and Design are all approved subjects for University Entrance. The study of Painting, Photography and Design can lead to work in film, theatre, design, advertising, curation, media, education, the art world, fashion, architecture etc. It also provides skills that are beneficial in all areas of study as it develops visual literacy, critical and creative thinking. These are important skills needed to inspire invention in the 21st century.
Creative Industries - Year 13
For a growing number of students, especially in the Arts that are starting to look at how their creative interests and strengths may become a career, business, income earner or lifestyle.
This course is designed to provide opportunities for our artists.
- to develop industry awareness to better engage in the commercial side of working as an artist. (Screen acting, self promotion, running a gig, selling art works and photographs, auditions for troupes or tertiary courses)
- to provide the learning spaces and mentoring to further develop their craft away from the confines of Arts assessments and classroom contexts.
- to support their transition into tertiary study, auditions for company places and working as an artist in the sector
The course content and mentoring will be tailored to the individual needs of the artist. The students will be expected to work and produce pieces, support the other creative’s and operate as a collective.
This course is not intended to replace any other course in a student’s learning program. It is intended to supplement the continuing study in at least one of the Arts learning areas by using available space in the learner’s timetable.
The course will not be driven by assessment; however, there may be opportunity to gain a limited number of credits through work that aligns with standards within the creative industries pathway framework.
Prerequisite: Must be engaged in the study of at least one Arts learning area in 2019 and wanting to explore the possibilities and realities of the creative industries.
