Physical Education

Year 11 Physical Education NCEA Level 1

This course is intended for students who have an excellent attitude towards practical physical education and a keen interest in learning the theory concepts of how to improve in sport, how the body works and personal well-being. The course is 100% internally assessed. Students will be involved in a performance improvement programme for badminton and 3 versus 3 basketball as well as individual sports, team sports and fitness, they will look at the realtionship between physical activity and personal well being and the development of interpersonal skills through practical activities.

Prerequisite: Entry is with approval of the Curriculum Leader, Physical Education

Important: Students must choose between Physical Education and Outdoor Education. You cannot do both.

Year 12 Physical Education NCEA Level 2

This course is intended for students who have coped well with the NCEA Level 1 course and who may wish to take Physical Education at Level 3. This course expands on practical and theory components explored at Level 1. It challenges students to perform at a higher level in the practical areas as well as develop a more in-depth understanding of theory concepts. This course is 100% internally assessed. This subject will cover volleyball, turbo touch, fitness concepts and a range of sports/games to enhance leadership, interpersonal skills and well being.

Year 13 Physical Education NCEA Level 3

This course is intended for students who may wish to study sports science at a tertiary level and/or vocations such as physiotherapy and nursing and for students who have a keen interest in the science of sports training and skill enhancement development. This course also looks at topical issues within sport, recreation and society. This course is 100% internally assessed.

Year 13 Applied Physical Education NCEA Level 3

This course has been designed for students who enjoy physical education with a focus on the practical component. It is an alternative course to the NCEA Level 3 Achievement Standards based course which can prepare students to go on to tertiary study. This course will look at skill development in individual and team games as well as how to design and implement a sports specific training programme.

Health Education

Year 11 Health Education NCEA Level 1

This course focuses on a wide range of health and relationship issues. Students will extend their knowledge of sexual health and sexuality issues and learn about strategies for maintaining postive, balanced relationships by developing problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Students will also investigate issues related to nutrition that lead to healthy choices in their life and the lives of others. Students will gain further awareness of Hauora, build knowledge of the physical, spiritual, emotional and social dimensions and will set goals to manage their own well-being as well as supporting others through times of change. Students will also develop strategies to promote well-being within the school and broader community.

Prerequisite: None

Year 12 Health Education NCEA Level 2

The Y12 Health course builds on information covered in Y11 about adolescent health issues, such as sexuality, relationships and mental health concerns for young people. Students will evaluate factors that influence people to make and deal with changes that occur in their lives. The course will also focus on identifying issues from within the school or community and how to take action towards improving people’s well-being. Strategies will be built to deal with situations involving people’s safety such as bullying, discrimination and harassment. This is a full NCEA Level 2 course with internal and external achievement standards being offered.

Prerequisite: It is helpful if students have completed Level 1 Health but this is not a requirement.

Year 13 Health Education NCEA Level 3

The Y13 Health course is an extension of the key concepts covered in Y12 Health with a focus on how health issues affect the well-being of individuals and society and the determinants of health that influence the health status of individuals. Students will research a current health issue in New Zealand and explain the factors that cause this issue and the consequence to well-being, interpersonal relationships and how the issue impacts in society. Students will evaluate current health practices in New Zealand and analyse ethical issues in the health sector. The course will also focus on developing skills and strategies through health promotion models to address and reduce the impacts of the health issues. Health is an approved university subject.

Prerequisite: It is helpful if students have completed Level 2 Health but this is not a requirement. Level 2 English is a requirement.

Pathways: A course in Health Education provides opportunities for tertiary studies in health, sports and recreation, teaching, nursing, medicine, holistic medicines, coaching, youth and community work, social sciences, sociology and psychology. These courses will benefit any student interested in Social Work careers and Social Sciences studies, Teaching, Health Promotion, Coaching, Police, Community or Youth Work or any people orientated occupations.

Outdoor Education

Year 11 Outdoor Education NCEA Level 1

This course is for students who have an interest in the outdoors and who are enthusiastic about the activities that can take place in the outdoor environment. The course requires a high level of motivation and commitment to the theoretical and the practical components of Outdoor Education. There is a large practical component to the course including some out of school trips. The benefits to the students will be the learning of new skills, appreciation and care of the environment, increased self-awareness and self-management, the development of relationships with others and a lot of enjoyment. The course is 100% internally assessed. Activities covered include surf life saving, tramping, rock climbing and mountain biking.

Prerequisite: Entry is with the approval of the Curriculum Leader: Outdoor Education

Recoveries: $230 (covers cost of trips and camps)

Year 12 Outdoor Education NCEA Level 2

This course is for students who enjoy the outdoors and the challenge it presents. There are demanding theory and practical components to the course and students must be willing to complete both these aspects to succeed. Critical thinking, skill development, risk management and environmental awareness will be a focus. Several camps will be scheduled throughout the year in which assessments will take place. These include sea kayaking, tramping, mountain biking and white water rafting. The course is 100% internally assessed.

Prerequisite: Entry is with the approval of the Curriculum Leader: Outdoor Education.

Recoveries: $320 (covers cost of trips and camps)

Year 13 Outdoor Education NCEA Level 3

This course is for students who have a passion for the outdoors and who want to challenge themselves in a range of outdoor activities. There will be a focus on developing physical skills, safety management, trip planning and logistics, self-management, leadership and critical thinking. There will be several trips out of school including overnight camps in which assessments will take place. These include a rock climbing camp, Crankworx Rotorua mountain biking, four day tramping trip and the Tough guy/gal race. Students need to have high levels of motivation, time management and resilience. The course is 100% internally assessed.

Prerequisite: Completing of Level 1 or Level 2 Outdoor Education

Entry is with approval of the Curriculum Leader: Outdoor Education

Recoveries: $340 (covers cost of trips and camps)

Food and Nutrition

Year 11 Food and Nutrition NCEA Level 1

This course meets the requirements for NCEA Level 1, offering credits via achievement standards, using both internal and external methods of assessment. This course covers topics such as food hygiene and safety, human nutrition, meal planning and evaluating nutritional information with regard to making food choices. In 2019 students can opt for a sports nutrition bias. Students are expected to enter for the full course. There is one external examination paper which enables students to achieve course endorsement. This course leads on to Y12 Hospitality and Catering and/or Y12 Food and Nutrition.

Prerequisite: None, but preferably Y9 and Y10 Home Economics.

Recoveries: Approximately $30 per term

Year 12 Food and Nutrition NCEA Level 2

This course will offer credits in Home Economics achievement standards using both internal and external methods of assessment. Topics will include investigating nutrition, nutritional issues and the relationship between health, well-being and food choices. In 2019 students can opt for a sports nutrition bias. This subject offers credits towards UE literacy.

Prerequisite: Level 1 NCEA Literacy credits

Recoveries: Approximately $30 per term

Year 13 Food and Nutrition NCEA Level 3

This course will offer credits in Home Economics achievements standards. Topics include investigating nutrition for specific health issue and how multinational food corporations influence our eating habits. In 2019 students can opt for a sports nutrition bias. This is an approved subject for University Entrance and offers credits towards UE literacy.

Prerequisite: Y12 Literacy

Recoveries: Approximately $30 per term

Hospitality and Catering

Year 11 Hospitality and Catering NCEA Level 1

This course meets the requirements for NCEA Level 1 credits via unit standards, using internal methods of assessment. This course covers topics such as food hygiene and safety, knife skills, meat, fruit and vegetable, eggs and cheese cookery and mocktail making. This course leads to Y12 Hospitality and Catering. This is a vocational pathways subject.

Prerequisite: None, but preferably Y9 and Y10 Home Economics.

Recoveries: Approximately $40 per term (includes workbooks)

Year 12 Hospitality and Catering NCEA Level 2

This course meets the requirements for NCEA Level 2. Students will be assessed by unit standards.

The course is based around the acquisition of knowledge relating to the preparation, cooking and service of food for the catering and hospitality industry. There is a focus on coffee appreciation and this includes learning how to prepare and serve espresso coffees at a commercial level, food safety, knife skills, grilling and salad making, all in a commercial kitchen. There are no external examinations. This is a vocational pathways subject.

Prerequisite: Level 1 NCEA Literacy credits.

Year 13 Hospitality and Catering NCEA Level 3

This course meets the requirements for NCEA Level 3. Students will be assessed by unit standards.

The course is based around the acquisition of knowledge relating to the preparation, cooking and service of food for the catering and hospitality industry. Topics can include food safety for a food and business, research into culinary terms and methods, and nutrition for the catering industry. Standards chosen can be personalised to students learning needs. There are no external examinations. This is a vocational pathways subject.

Prerequisite: Level 1 NCEA Literacy credits.
