Spirals have been used in ancient symbols found in a variety of locations. One example is the triskelion or triskeles.

"This is a motif consisting of a triple spiral exhibiting rotational symmetry. The spiral design can be based on interlocking Archimedean spirals, or represent three bent human legs. The triple spiral symbol, appears in many early cultures, the first in Malta (4400–3600 BCE) and in the astronomical calendar at the famous megalithic tomb of Newgrange in Ireland built around 3200 BCE,[10] as well as on Mycenaean pottery." Your family, the 3-5 most important aspects of your life,... sleeping, dreaming and waking? What ideas belong in a group where all parts are necessary for the whole? Hello My Most Amazing Artists! Today I want to share with you a book called "Swirl by Swirl". It explores spirals found in nature. With the help of some Kindergarten and 5th and 6th grade students at Robinson, I was able to make some charcoal which I am sharing with you! Let's use this charcoal to make a sketch of a seashell. I love shells, they are awesome spiral forms found in nature! I can't wait to explore drawing shells with you. For this project you will need:

Paper, a piece of charcoal, and if you like a tortillon or stub stick for blending. You can also use your finger or a Q-tip for blending. If you don't have charcoal you can do this with a soft graphite pencil.

If you don't have a shell at home you can use the same one I did in my example or in the book swirl by swirl (or on the heading banner on the September tab of this website).
