Hello My Most Amazing Artists! Today I want to share with you a book called "Swirl by Swirl". It explores spirals found in nature. With the help of some Kindergarten and 5th and 6th grade students at Robinson, I was able to make some charcoal which I am sharing with you! Let's use this charcoal to make a sketch of a seashell. I love shells, they are awesome spiral forms found in nature! I can't wait to explore drawing shells with you. For this project you will need:

Paper, a piece of charcoal, and if you like a tortillon or stub stick for blending. You can also use your finger or a Q-tip for blending. If you don't have charcoal you can do this with a soft graphite pencil.

If you would like to learn about making your own charcoal check out this short video. This is similar to the method we used to make the charcoal you will be using in class. Enjoy drawing with the charcoal we made for you in the outdoor classroom!

Draw the shell from any direction you like. If it seems easier to draw it looking at the spiral end, feel free to do it this way. Remember to add shading in the dark areas. The next one is about shading a spiral. Then another one about how to use a Tortillon or blending stub. If you would prefer to just try it out and not watch this video feel free.

Hello Amazing Artists! Please watch this Read Aloud Book. It is about the artwork of the artist Vincent Van Gogh. He loved nature and closely observing shapes and forms in nature. He also used a lot of swirls and spirals in his artwork. Closely look at his painting "The Starry Night". Imagine what it would be like to enter his painting. Then Draw a picture of what you could see inside his bright and swirling starry night.

Watch this video and using a fine black marker (sharpie or permanent is best) create your own spiral design.
