Home-made balances

An independent activity- students may need help with the construction process.

Equipment: Coat hanger, string, 2 x paper bowls- 4 x holes pre-cut for string.

What to do:

Support children to make their own balance by tying a bowl to each side of a coat hanger (try to make the string lengths as even as possible).

The children can now select different objects to first estimate which is heavier and then compare using their balance.
