Types of Regions
Formal (uniform) region: is a region marked by a shared trade this could be cultural or physical. An example of this is China itself. All of China shares a common language, nationality, and culture.
Functional (nodal) region: A region that is marked by a particular set of activities that occur. The center of the activities is called the node. A Functional Region is Wuhan. This is a map representing the transportation network in China. It all centers around Wuhan.
Vernacular (perceptual) regions: regions that exist as an idea. These areas also contribute to people's sense of cultural identity. For example, on this map, there are many regions. People in the Tibet region, for instance, view Tibet as part of their culture and identity.
