Glossary of Interventions

Attention Autism

Attention Autism is a learning approach created by speech and language therapist Gina Davies, that aims to develop natural and spontaneous communication skills in Autistic children through the use of visually based and highly motivating activities.

Bear Necessities

Bear Necessities is designed for children who need extra support with the basics of learning to read; children who are not learning letter-sound correspondences and blending in whole-class teaching.

Lego Therapy

Lego therapy is a social development program for autistic children and other children with social communication difficulties. It uses children's love of Lego play, as well as their strengths and interests, to develop communication and social skills.

Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)

The Picture Exchange Communication System®, or PECS®, allows people with little or no communication abilities to communicate using pictures. People using PECS are taught to approach another person and give them a picture of a desired item in exchange for that item. By doing so, the person is able to initiate communication. A child or adult with autism can use PECS to communicate a request, a thought, or anything that can reasonably be displayed or symbolized on a picture card. PECS works well in the home or in the classroom.

Precision Teaching

Precision teaching is an effective intervention for monitoring the progress of a child or young person who is having difficulty acquiring and maintaining educational skills. It can be used in early years, primary and secondary settings and can be applied to areas of the curriculum that can be broken down into clear objectives, eg: numeracy and literacy skills.

Sensory Circuits

A sensory circuit is a form of sensory integration intervention. It involves a sequence of physical activities that are designed to alert, organise and calm the child.

The sensory circuit aims to facilitate sensory processing to help children regulate and organise their senses in order to achieve the ‘just right’ or optimum level of alertness required for effective learning.

The circuit should be an active, physical and fun activity that children enjoy doing.
