Music Development Plan Summary
Intent, Implementation and Impact
Music is a powerful, unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act. It transcends different cultures, abilities and generations – stimulating responses on both emotional and intellectual levels. It allows opportunity for personal expression and plays an important part in the personal development of an individual.
Intent:
At Martham, our Music curriculum aims to promote the enthusiasm for, and the enjoyment of, music in all its forms. Our goal is for the children to develop musical skills and knowledge through effective teaching where children are fully engaged in their learning. By engaging our children in musical experiences, we offer them opportunities to develop the skills, attitudes and attributes that they need to become confident performers, composers and listeners, and to develop a life-long love of music. This in turn can support learning in other curriculum areas, as well as developing life skills such as listening, the ability to concentrate, creativity, self-confidence and a sensitivity towards others and the environment. At Martham we are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.
Implementation:
Our music curriculum provides the opportunity for children to sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is delivered through a structured, co-curricular music programme, as well as weekly singing assemblies, various concerts and performances, musical clubs and teaching from specialist music teachers. In this way, children at Martham are taught how to listen and respond to a variety of musical genres, through the medium of singing, playing instruments, and exploring form. The elements of music are taught so that children are able to use some of the language of music to dissect it, and understand how it is made, played, appreciated and analysed. They also learn how to compose, focusing on the different dimensions of music, which in turn feeds their understanding when listening, playing, or analysing music.
Impact:
Throughout each child’s journey at Martham, their musical skills and understanding are built year on year, from singing nursery rhymes and action songs from memory and performing simple rhythm patterns on tuned and untuned percussion instruments in Early Years, progressing their skills and understanding in KS1 where they also experience opportunities to use ukuleles and join the school choir, to further developing their skills and knowledge of the subject in KS2, where the children access music confidently, and have the ability to read and follow a simple musical or graphic score. Throughout all of this the child’s enjoyment of music is a key element, running alongside the ‘taught’ musical skills and objectives.
By the end of their time at Martham:
Children will understand and apply subject specific vocabulary;
Children will retain and build on knowledge and understanding of music;
Children will have the opportunity to perform and develop musical skills;
Children will use music as a form of expression;
Children will participate in wider musical activities;
Children will develop a love of music and an appreciation of different music forms.
