Overview
Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent:
At Martham, children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding of the world, as well as their place in it. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives, equipping them for further education and beyond. We aim to inspire the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
Implementation:
Geography at Martham is taught in topics throughout the year. Through their work in Geography, children learn about their local area and compare their life in this area with that in other regions in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. As pupils progress, they deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. They learn how to draw and interpret maps and use subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical Geography, with accuracy and confidence. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills for each topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each year group across the school.
Impact:
As children progress throughout the school, they develop knowledge, understanding and appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context. As a Year 6 Geographer, transitioning to secondary school, we aspire that pupils will have developed a geographical mind of inquiry; an understanding of the world and its human and physical connections; how history has played a part in influencing our planet in terms of trade and migration and the impact that the human race has on the planet.
