AT MARTHAM ACADEMY AND NURSERY ART IS A PERSONAL JOURNEY
Intent
At Martham Academy and Nursery, we aim for our children to be excited about art and to be able to express and share their ideas in a variety of different ways. We want children to think more openly about art, explore different concepts and mediums and become more interested, surprised and in awe with what they discover. We want children to recognise that art is far more than a series of technical skills. We would like our children to develop creative thinking which helps them to learn through art, as well as about art. We help our children to realise that art is a journey and celebration of practise, skill and expertise.
Art is a progressive journey and we help our children to experience it in a way that is personal and unique to them. This may be encouraging children to tell us what it felt like to them and encouraging them to feel safe and supported in their development journey, where there is no right or wrong.
We will encourage children to explore different thinking about art including the most modern of techniques. We aim to excite children by introducing them to artists both past and present, discovering their style, ethos and philosophy. By learning about art, we want children to apply their learnt knowledge and skills to a wide variety of different situations.
We seek to broaden children's real life experiences both inside and outside of school through educational visits, exploration, visitors and discovery. Sometimes we look but do not see. Visual Literacy is important across all areas of the curriculum and we will teach our children to become learners who can read and value an image while developing their own visual literacy skills.
Implementation:
Art at Martham Academy and Nursery is supported by the Access Art Primary Curriculum. This programme offers different art pathways which can inspire our pupils learning. Children will experience a combination of sculpture, figurative or landscape artwork, printmaking, textiles, computing and painting. Children use sketchbooks to create and record their learning journey for their art to inspire and be appreciated by others. Curiosity, creativity and critical thinking skills will be encouraged when valuing the visual form. Children will regularly address valid questions about art, emotions, ideas, difference and significance. As pupils progress they will develop knowledge, skills and the ability to express how they feel about different art pieces. They will be encouraged to look and see forms for different angles and viewpoints.
Children will learn about different styles of art and the lives of artists historically, locally or from a point of interest. To ensure progression, teachers will regularly identify key knowledge and skills for each exploration. Children will be encouraged to use different canvases to display their art and this will include the outside and natural resources.
Impact:
As children progress through the school they will have developed the ability to represent, show and explain what they see. Using their secure knowledge, skill, curiosity and critical thinking they will be able to express their ideas. Children will understand the complexity of Artists lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and the experiences which have taken the artist on a journey to create the visual form. Children will understand the methods and skills applied to using different art mediums and collect evidence of this in their sketchbooks.
