At Martham Academy Maths Means More!
Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent:
We believe that ‘The answer is just the beginning of the journey’. Pupils at Martham develop resilience to stick with a problem and look at all the possibilities. They use a range of practical equipment, drawings, jottings to support their learning and they understand why they are doing things rather than following a procedure. Pupils learn skills which will enable them to solve problems and recognise that Maths really is all around us. They understand what is meant by ‘Maths Means More!’ and can explain why. We want pupils to be able to use their skills with flexibility as they move through each stage in their education; making connections between different aspects of Maths as they learn.
Implementation:
The statutory framework for EYFS is followed to ensure continuity and progression. From the moment children enter our nursery they are encouraged to notice things; be curious about numbers, shapes, patterns and are encouraged to use Maths as a way to understand the world around them.
Long term and medium term plans for KS1 and KS2 are based on the National Curriculum programmes of study for mathematics. Connections are made across the curriculum in order to make use of other opportunities to apply and develop skills. NRICH tasks are used to develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills. Practical resources are used throughout the school in order to support conceptual understanding.
Multiplication bonds are specifically taught to ensure that pupils are given time to explore each one and to make connections between them.
Impact:
Maths has a high profile at Martham and pupils see why ‘Maths Means More’. Pupils enjoy Maths and they are able to explain their thinking. They have a positive attitude towards the subject and see how it is central to the world around them. Pupils see that it is a creative subject and can see the beauty and power of it- for example Maths in nature. Pupils are confident to play around with numbers and show resilience when grappling with problems; using what they know to work out things they don’t know by noticing connections between different areas of mathematics. Pupils recognise that we are all mathematicians and can all do Maths.

How to support your child at home
Talking to your child about Maths in the world around them is a great way to support and encourage your child. Maths really is all around us so taking time to notice things that link to Maths can really help your child to see how it is important in our everyday lives. Most importantly, be positive about the subject and reinforce the fact that we are all mathematicians.
NRICH is a brilliant website with a dedicated section for parents. It has great ideas for activities/games to play with your child and it also provides age appropriate book lists with books that have lovely links to Maths.
Your child has a Times Tables Rockstars login so they can play a variety of games that help to support their fluency and recall. With Times Tables it is great to help your child use facts they do know to work out those they don't e.g. I can use 8 x 4 to work out 8 x 8 by doubling. Using what we know to work out what we don't is so important in Maths and talking about strategies we can use helps to build confidence in the subject.
