We provide a broad and well-balanced curriculum which supports the academic, social and personal development of every child. Our curriculum is delivered in an exciting and purposeful way that aims to provide the children with lifelong skills. The children are encouraged to incorporate the hives for learning across all aspects of their learning which encompass the values of our school.
During morning lessons children are taught the core subjects; Maths and English, through which they learn and practice fast maths, handwriting, spelling, phonics and guided reading. We ensure that there is continuity in how these lessons are taught throughout the school to enable all children to achieve their full potential.
Foundation subjects are taught in the afternoon, although meaningful links are made to Maths and English where appropriate. All areas of the curriculum encourage children to form links to their prior learning and identify progression.
We are a school that uses the Thrive approach, this means that we promote an ethos of identifying children’s individual needs and adapting learning around these. Our curriculum ensures that we nurture and enhance the pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development to help them develop positive relationships and a critical appreciation of and respect for their own and others’ beliefs, culture and identity. Children have the opportunity to link their learning to current events, celebrations and festivals and embrace differences both nationally and internationally.
Within the Martham Method, the National Curriculum is taught in an exciting and purposeful way. A personalised curriculum that is relevant to our school and pupils in Martham is an additional element to our curricular provision. This includes the use of our local environment and community. Our school grounds have been developed to provide a stimulating learning environment. Cross-curricular links are exploited to make learning interesting and meaningful. The curriculum is enhanced through visits, visitors and special events throughout the year.
High standards of teaching and learning are embedded within this framework. The teaching of English and Mathematics along with the teaching of thinking skills, in which we incorporate our maths Superpowers to ensure pupils gain essential skills, understanding and knowledge, which in turn, enables them to become independent in their learning. We have a strong emphasis on teaching a wide range of skills to prepare children for each transitional phase, including secondary education and their future role in society. At Martham we aim to develop our pupils' spiritual, moral, cultural and social development. The Personal Development curriculum teaches children the fundamental British Values, Democracy, the rule of law, respect and tolerance and individual liberty. These values underpin what it is to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Great Britain, valuing our community and celebrating Diversity of the UK. Pupils are encouraged to develop in ways that incorporate our key values through our learning bees - Behaviours for Learning
We offer a large selection of extra-curricular activities. These activities are important to the culture and ethos of the school, as they provide opportunities for all ages to experience and enjoy a wide range of pursuits. These activities include; Lego, Premier Sports, Sports, Choir, Orchestra and both internal and external Instrumental lessons along with a range of other activities to broaden the experiences of our children.
In a wide variety of sports and also music, our school is involved in a programme of festivals and competitions. Fixtures are arranged on a regular basis and these provide opportunities for our children to meet and compete against children from other schools.
