Central idea: Shelters, for humans and animals, is a basic need.
Our initial class discussion about our new central idea was incredibly exciting. The children already have a lot of knowledge to build on.
When asked about the meaning of the word shelter, the children replied:
Anton: It is something with a roof and a place for protection.
Halle: It is a place to stay dry when it is raining.
Mia: It is a place to get love and care from your family.
When asked what makes a good shelter the children replied:
Blue: A home should keep you safe and dry.
Henry: Animals make their own shelters like birds they build a nest, it needs to be able to protect them.
Maria-Rose: We will need to make our shelters strong so they don't fall down or break.
The children were motivated to create a class den so using social skills, communication skills and teamwork, many children got to work and build a den using the furniture in our classroom and wider school along with the sheets some families had donated. The den was a great success! As a result, we have seen thoughtful imaginative play as well as an opportunity for meaningful writing opportunities.
Hannah: "We need to make the den big enough for all of our friends."
Teddy: "We need to make sure the sides are strong because otherwise it will fall down."
Hudson: "All shelters need a roof to keep you dry when it rain. We need a roof on our den."
Nixie: "We all need a shelter to stay safe and dry. We need somewhere to eat and sleep too."
