3/4Elm   Learning Update

Central idea: Balance in our lives can promote health, well-being and contentment

In the past week or two, we in Elm class have been extremely busy cooking, creating, writing, calculating, reading and a whole other host of activities. Our cooking, which saw the children create a healthy wrap, was very successful. Using a variety of ingredients, children practised cutting, peeling and grating (without any accidents!) and produced a healthy wrap. They then wrote a set of instructions about it.

In science, our attentions have moved from the digestive system to the skeletal system. We have studied the purpose of the skeleton and bones that protect specific parts of the body, such as the skull protecting the brain. The class were then set a challenge; could they design and build a 'skeleton' to protect a chocolate tea cake? There was much enthusiasm in the task, which may or may not have been because they got to eat the tea cake afterwards. The effort the class went to was tremendous and the ideas varied - some covered the tea cake in layer after layer of material, while others produced more refined creations. Our discussion afterwards centred around the practicalities of the different skeletal designs.

I was staggered with the effort put into the homework activities - there was so much to display in our showcase on Wednesday afternoon that we had to continue into Thursday afternoon too! The pride with which the children explained and displayed their work was brilliant to see. I will be creating a display in the classroom of as much of this homework as possible. Well done to all!

It has been a long term and the class have all done themselves proud with how they have done - they deserve this break! Have a wonderful two weeks off!
