Central idea: Natural disasters impact living things and their environments
It has been a busy and exciting start to the new year! The children continue to demonstrate what fantastic learners they all are and engage well with our PYP inquiry based learning using their skills to shape their ideas and thoughts.
We began our inquiry by delving into natural disasters and emergencies, thinking about how these affect the world around us, this is particularly topical with recent flooding after Storm Goretti and the flood alerts in Medway. The children have used their chromebooks to research the impact of not only flooding but also volcanos, earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis. In music we linked our central idea by thinking about and experimenting into how music can represent sounds of elements around us creating chants and using 'call and response'.
The children created some amazing posters illustrating the danger of floods and wrote some fascinating facts to accompany their illustrations.
In maths we have finished our strategy of multiplication and division where we focused on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Now, we are exploring fractions, finding a half, quarter and third learning some exciting vocabulary.
In writing, the children have been exploring the genre of poetry, linking into the theme of water and the construction of poetry.
