Welcome Back!

Although some may call it the "spring of deception" or "mud season" and "third winter" may actually be around the corner we ARE officially in spring. That means gearing up for our summer gardening season.

While things are still brown outside, they're quickly getting green inside. Several classes have already started seeds for plants that we will grow in our garden this summer, and extra that we will sell during our spring plant sale.

Plants like tomatoes, peppers and onions need a long growing season, so in order to give them the time they need we start them indoors at this time of year. They'll get a jump on summer by spending several weeks under lights in each classroom's grow lab. By the time it's warm enough to transplant them outside, they should be a good size to have a healthy headstart.

Ms. Curry's class is growing tomatoes, cabbage and lettuce, Mr. Lee's class is growing both sweet and hot peppers and Ms. Fitzgerald's class is growing lots of kale. The kale, cabbage and lettuce seeds are cold hardy veggies that can be transplanted outside pretty early in the season.

Ms. Callahan and Lovejoy's class also started marigold seeds so that we can plant plenty of flowers to attract our pollinators and other beneficial insects. Gardens love and need plenty of bees.
