Maths

what is maths?

Year 7 Mathematics builds upon the Numeracy skills acquired in the Primary Years and seeks to further develop them. The knowledge and skills that underpin Numeracy are explicitly taught in the Mathematics strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. This is reinforced and further exemplified in and across other curriculum areas. Through this process students recognise that Mathematics is widely used in the real world.

The Year 7 Secondary Mathematics Program continues to focus on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematics to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently. Mathematics is composed of multiple but interrelated and interdependent concepts and structures which students apply beyond the mathematics classroom.

This course aims for students to learn about the ‘why’ behind the Maths as well as the ‘how to’. They will develop critical and creative thinking along with metacognitive skills, where they will be asked to justify and record how they solved a problem through rich discussion, bringing Literacy into the Mathematics classroom.

  • Place Value and the Four Operations

  • Rational Numbers: Fractions and Proportion

  • Patterns and Algebra

  • Measurement

  • Probability

  • Statistics

  • Finance

  • Linear Equations

  • Linear Graphing

HOW MANY SESSIONS IN A WEEK?

There are 5 lessons dedicated to Year 7 Mathematics comprising 4 standard Maths lessons focusing on the areas of study shown above, and one Numeracy lesson focusing on problem solving and reasoning skills.

HOW MANY HOURS OF HOMEWORK IS RECOMMENDED FOR MATHS?

At Year 7 level, it is recommended that students spend approximately 10 minutes each night to consolidate the learning that has taken place in their class. This will be teacher directed.

The Homework Room is also available each lunch time for students who choose to complete homework if, for example, they have an outside activity on a particular evening and may not have as much time. The Homework Room is also used to hold students to account who have not completed their set homework.
