Here are some strategies to help you support your child with their reading.
For Magenta, Red, and Yellow readers, we have included prompts you can use with your child to support them with decoding/reading unknown words.
Once your child is reading Blue and above, it is important to support them with both comprehension and decoding. Below are some questions to ask before, during and after reading with your child.

- Look at the picture
- Get your mouth ready
- Look for word chunks
- Break the word into chunks
- Read through the word
- Read on and think .. what word would make sense
- Look for keywords

BEFORE YOU READ
Look at the pictures, the book cover and the title
- What do you think it's all about?
- What do you think might happen in the story?
- What do you know about the pictures?
- Do you remember a time when something like that happened to you? What did you do?
AS YOU READ
- What will happen next?
- Is that what happened?
- What was different or what was the same?
- What do you think will happen now?
AFTER READING
Talk about what happening in the story - retell the events of the story
- What do you think this means?
- Is there another way you would have done that?
- Do you have any questions you'd like to ask?
