English

We follow the National Curriculum for English. Synthetic phonics are taught systematically in Early Years and Key Stage 1 following Read Write Inc. 

After finishing their phonics teaching, children progress onto our Accelerated Reader program.

Writing

Writing skills are taught using the Talk for Writing method which ensures a systematic approach to the teaching of writing. Children learn to write in a variety of styles for a range of purposes. The sequence focuses on developing children’s spoken language as the basis for the development of written language, enabling them to develop their “writer’s voice”. Children also learn grammatical concepts through this structure. The skills taught within our writing sessions are applied across the wider curriculum.

Handwriting

Handwriting is taught using the PenPals for Writing handwriting scheme which gives a clear progression through five developmental stages: physical preparation for handwriting; securing correct letter formation; beginning to join along, securing the joins and practicing speed, fluency and developing a personal style. 

Spelling

Spelling is taught daily in key stage two using the Word Blaze program. Children are encouraged to look and learn spelling patterns and rules. Children are set 20 spelling words to learn at home each week before being tested in school.
