Mainestreet How To Guides
**IMPORTANT: ALL GUIDES ARE FOR THE CLASSIC STUDENT CENTER**
While the newer version of the student center is visually nicer, we find that accomplishing the following thigs are easier to do in the classic student center.
Advising Notes View
In your Student Center look at the right side column. Partway down the page is a section showing your advisor(s) names and just below the names is a link for "Advisor Notes".
Click on that link and you'll see your most recent note.
At the top of that note is a link to "view all" and if you click that you can scroll back through your entire advising note history.
Create a Wish List of Classes
Go to your Student Center and click on the "Wish List" link on the left side of the page.
Select the semester.
Click on "search". DO NOT TRY TO ENTER A CLASS NUMBER, you will need to use the "search" button.
Enter the course prefix and number, for example "NUR" and "300", and click search.
You will see a list of available courses. Courses that have open seats are identified by a green circle. Courses that do not have open seats have a blue square. A yellow triangle identifies the course is full and a waitlist is available.
On the right side of the page click "select" for the course you want to add to your Wish List.
On the next screen click "next". and the course is now on your Wish List.
Students can add more than one section of a course to their Wish List, and we often encourage this for labs since they have small enrollments and may fill up quickly. It's good to have a backup section in mind in case your preferred section is full when you go to register.
Financial Terms and Conditions Hold
Login to your Mainestreet Student Center.
Click on “Student Self Service” from the menu of links.
Click on “Classic Student Center”
Click on the link for “Financial Terms and Conditions Statement” in your Mainestreet Student Center To Do List and follow the prompts. The To Do List is on the right column of the page.
The Financial Terms and Conditions Hold will automatically be removed once you complete the steps.
Registration Enrollment Date
At USM students register on different dates, depending on the number of credits they have completed. The more credits, the earlier the registration date.
Go to your Mainestreet Student Center.
On the right side of the page, part way down, you will see a section for "Enrollment Date". This shows you the date, at 6 am, on which you may start registering for an upcoming semester. Dates are usually posted a few months before registration begins.
View & Understand a Transfer Credit Report
Log in to your Mainestreet Classic Student Center.
Look at the left column of links and click on “Transfer Credit Report.”
The report will be displayed and include your entire transfer history.
Once you’ve accessed your Transfer Credit Report you will first see information about the which non-USM university you took classes at and below that a table of courses.
The Source Institution shows where you took the original course.
Incoming Course: left side of the table, including the name, course number and grade for the original course you took.
Equivalent Course: right side of the table, and shows what USM determined the course would equal at USM.
The last column on the right side shows whether the course met any Core general education requirements.
Anything that transferred as #XX course in the USM equivalent column means that USM determined that the course was good for college credit, but that it did not exactly match any of our courses. Consult with your advisor about courses that transfer in as #XX and how they will impact your degree plan.
Verify that you will have 120 Credits needed to Graduate & General Education Completion
Verify that you will have 120 Credits to Graduate & USM Core General Education Completion
Each student should use the tutorial below to verify that they will reach at 120 credits needed to graduate on time and that their general education courses (if relevant) will be completed.
Video Tutorial for Calculating Credits to Graduate and General Education Completion ***Make sure to double-check this with your professional or faculty advisor, better safe than sorry by having you and your faculty both verify the calculation**. Google Slides used in the Video
This is not relevant to you if you have a prior bachelor's degree. You already have more than 120 credits completed and do not need core general education courses.
Add or Update Your Preferred Name
In your Classic Student Center, scroll down the page until you see a list of links on the left for Emergency Contact, Names, User Preferences.
Click on "Names".
You can set a preferred name by clicking on the red pencil icon on this page, or "add a new name".
Preferred names will be displayed as the sender on email (but will not update your actual @maine.edu address), and will show on course rosters for your faculty and in your Student Center and other places as described in the Preferred Name Policy.
Add or Update an Emergency Contact
In your Classic Student Center, scroll down the page until you see a list of links on the left for Emergency Contact, Names, User Preferences.
Click on "Emergency Contact".
Add or update your emergency contact(s) on the page that opens.
Update Contact Information - Address, Mailing Address, Phone(s)
In your Classic Student Center, scroll down the page until you see a section displaying "Contact Information"
Click on the area you would like to update.
Home Address
You can list more than one address and indicate which one you'd like mail to go to. For example a dorm address and a home address. Or you can add an address with an effective date if you are moving.
Home Phone
Note that you may or may not see a number listed under "home phone". If you only have a cellphone on record nothing will display initially but when you click on "home phone" on the next screen you'll see any phone numbers, including cell phone, that are on file.
**IMPORTANT** Please keep an accurate phone number in Mainestreet. The School of Nursing sometimes needs to call about time sensitive paperwork for clincials, and in some cases, we have to provide a phone number on clinical paperwork for a hospital to register you for COVID tracking or related things.
Legal Name Changes & Updating Your @maine.edu email Address and User Name
IMPORTANT: Please notify Dr. Provost and Stacey Whitney of any legal name change while you are in the nursing program. We track students very closely and having accurate names in our databases and on clinical paperwork is very important.
Click here for a guide from to Changing your Legal Name and/or @maine.edu User Name.
Note that there are several separate steps listed on this USM totorial and it's important to complete all of them. If you do not your @maine.edu email will not be updated to a new name.
Search for Ccore General Education Classes
To search for a USM Core (general education) classes that meet a specific Core requirement go to your Mainestreet Classic Student Center and click on the “Search for Classes” button. Note that you can also search for classes from within the Wish List.
Select the Term/Semester that you want to search.
Leave both the Course Subject and Course Number fields blank.
Scroll down to the last drop down menu “Gen Ed Category” and select the Core category that you want to search for.
Students who are using the current USM Core requirements should look at the categories that start with “A---“. Ex. A—Cultural Interp.
Once you have selected a category click “Search” and the results will show all available classes that would meet that Core requirement and which have open seats.
OPTIONAL - Show Closed Classes
If you want to also view closed sections of the course (no open seats) then on the search page uncheck the box for “Show Open Classes Only” before you click “search”
OPTIONAL – Restrict Results by Location
If you would like to see only classes offered on a specific campus or online select a location from the Location drop down menu. Portland, Gorham,
Lewiston, or Web/Online are the most commonly used options.
**See the Bottom of this webpage for a screenshot showing steps 1-5.
