Involvement Opportunities for Students

Work Study Opportunities in the School of Nursing

The School of Nursing sometimes has federal work study opportunity for eligible students.   We employ undergraduate students to support our simulation and skills labs, as administrative support and as a student assistant to the undergrad coordinators.

Please visit the Career Hub website to see any available postings and explore other work study jobs at USM.

We also share openings for School of Nursing work study positions through the undergrad email listservs.

School of Nursing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Committee

As students, staff, faculty, administrators, and alumni of the University of Southern Maine School of Nursing CEI Task Force, we recognize the harmful effects of racism on all members of our community. In partnership with groups from across the university campus and within the larger community, our mission is to interrogate how racism operates within our structures, policies, practices, norms, values, and beliefs; build capacity to undo structural inequality in our institution and professional communities; and develop mechanisms by which to assess our progress towards these goals, to be accountable to our community, and continually center this work as a priority within the School of Nursing. We come together with an understanding that racism and other forms of oppression are a primary cause of health disparities. By working to transform our practices and healthcare systems, we work toward a society that ensures equity and justice for all.

This group works to improve DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility) in the School of Nursing, and supports ongoing development and learning in these areas.

It is made up of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and all share an equal voice and role in the group.

USM Student Nurse Organization (SNO)

Cool Video about SNO!!

The purpose of SNO is to promote faster development of leadership skills and build community among the students, faculty, and staff of USM. This goal is attained through participation in various health-related projects, community service, fund-raising events, and by expanding awareness of both state and national nurse's associations. SNO’s purpose is to serve as a resource for its members, nursing and non-nursing students, all campuses of USM and the greater Portland communities through varied events and projects.

Membership

Membership is open to all undergraduate, graduate, accelerated, and options students at the University of Southern Maine without requirement of any local chapter dues. If national membership is desired, a fee will have to be paid. Membership is open to any other individuals whom the organization chooses to invite. Faculty are welcome at group meetings.

Can't go to every meeting? That’s okay! Let us know and we will work with you and keep you in the loop.

Maine State Nurses Association

The Maine Student Nurses Association is a professional organization run by and for nursing students across Maine’s 15 Schools of Nursing.  It is a chapter of the National Student Nurse Association, whose mission is to introduce student nurses to the value of participating in a professional nursing organization. Belonging to a group that connects you to colleagues in your state and in the country can completely change your perspective.  It can broaden your focus and inspire you to think bigger about what you might do with this degree in nursing.

The cost of joining is less than $50/ year, and the USM faculty have a mentoring program that supports any student for whom cost is a barrier to joining.   The website for the Maine Student Nurses Association is https://www.facebook.com/mainestudentnurses/ and for the National Student Nurses Association is nsna.org

Student Representatives on School of Nursing Committees

We include student representatives on several vital committees within the School of Nursing.  These include the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, the Simulation & Lab Committee, the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Taskforce, Graduation/Pinning Ceremony Planning.

Students on these committees are voices for their student peers and being a student representative is a fantastic way to engage with the school.  Some committees have multiple student representatives since we seek representation from our various cohorts including Portland, Lewiston, Accelerated and RN to BS students.

If you are interested in being a student representative please contact Netty Provost, netty.provost@maine.edu.

USM Melanin in Medicine Student Organization

MiM serves to combat the marginalization of students of color within the health and medical sciences. We create safe and academically encouraging spaces for these students to bond, promote access to professional connections and networking opportunities, and provide resources for navigating pre-health tracks. Melanin in Medicine advocates for racial equity, justice, and accountability on campus.
