INTRODUCTION TO ACTING/DRAMA  - 01575  - 1 CREDIT

Description:  This introductory course will examine the purpose and underlying principles of acting, including the voice and body training in the projection of accurate characterization in dramatic productions.  Students will study the art of public speaking, the fundamentals of acting on the stage, and the importance of communication.  Students will incorporate these techniques using the principles of improvisation, scene study and play-writing that will culminate in several performances on stage and in film. No prior acting experience is needed to succeed in this course.

Engineering

One credit of the Arts meets the graduation requirement.  From launching space explorations to delivering safe, clean water to communities, engineers find solutions to pressing problems and turn their ideas into reality. MHS Project Lead the Way Engineering empowers students to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and make the leap from dreamer to doer. The program’s courses engage students in compelling, real-world challenges that help them become better collaborators and thinkers. Students take from the courses in-demand knowledge and skills they will use in high school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take. 

COLLEGE ENGINEERING ESSENTIALS - 07000 - 1 CREDIT

Prerequisite:  None

Credit: Art or General Elective

Description: This project-based course introduces students to engineering concepts that are applicable across multiple engineering disciplines.  Design project examples include air-pressure water rockets, robotics, automation & coding, mini electric vehicles, 3-D modeling and printing, bridges and towers.  Students are placed into friendly competition with teams in their section and other sections as they execute multiple design cycles to improve their products and solutions.  Students can qualify for three transferable elective credits from Rochester Institute of Technology by passing a Project Lead The Way End of Course Assessment.

Visual Arts

Art education is an essential component of human development. Through Visual Art, students are empowered to be creative, “out of the box” thinkers and conscious designers. Students learn to discover and express who they are; communicate their ideas, understand the visual, cultural, as well as the virtual world. Learn to make connections and develop an increasing sense of personal aesthetic. Our art program offers a variety of elective courses, both for art majors and for those wishing to take art to increase their appreciation of specific topics. Emphasis will be placed on fine arts, and visual communication including advertising design, graphic design, pottery, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, art history. AP classes are offered for those students who are planning to continue art after high school. One credit of Visual Arts meets the graduation requirement. One way to earn an Advanced Regents Diploma is for students to pursue a 5 unit sequence in the Arts.

Description:   This year-long course covers the elements and principles of design through a wide variety of materials.  Students will be introduced to a variety of materials, techniques and knowledge that will prepare them to take advanced visual arts courses.  Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and creativity to produce works through, including, but not limited to, drawing, painting, design, and sculpture and art history/criticism.  This class is a prerequisite for advanced art courses and fulfills the graduation requirement.

MUSIC

One credit of the Arts meets the graduation requirement.  The Music program here at MHS is an exciting, highly creative learning environment designed to help all students achieve their maximum potential.  Whether enrolled in a performing ensemble or music technology, students will be engaged in coursework designed to emulate real-world activities while developing their creativity.  Each of these courses are open to all students, and can progress towards upper-level coursework throughout your high school career.

CONCERT BAND  - 09102  - 1 CREDIT

Description: Concert Band is primarily a learning ensemble and is open to all MHS students.  Concert Band consists of daily rehearsals and weekly group lessons. Students must demonstrate the ability and interest to learn and grow as individual musicians and band members.  The primary goal of this ensemble is to develop the technical proficiency and musical knowledge needed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of music as an art form, as well as to make future advancements in the Mahopac High School band program.  Music performed at concerts will be selected from the standard repertory.  Outside performances are part of the course and curriculum.  Performances include, but are not limited to, concerts and community events.

PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA  - 09113  - 1 CREDIT

Credit: Music

Description: Philharmonic Orchestra is offered to students with previous orchestral experience and new students alike. Philharmonic Orchestra consists of daily rehearsals and weekly group lessons. Educational emphasis is placed on the development of instrumental technique, music reading and comprehension skills, independent musicianship, and style. Throughout the course, students will develop fundamental rehearsal skills, technique, basic theory knowledge, and good sight-reading skills.  Students will be responsible for the preparation of ensemble music, lesson assignments, daily home practice, and multiple concerts/events throughout the year. Most students take this course all four years of high school, and it also opens the door to other musical opportunities. 

CHORUS   - 09122 - 1 CREDIT

Description:  Chorus is a vocal ensemble open to all MHS students.  Students will learn and perform a variety of choral music, from the standard repertoire through modern styles including musical theater, jazz, and pop arrangements.  Students will learn music literacy and ensemble skills such as harmonizing, blending, and improvising.  Students will also practice and develop healthy and flexible vocal techniques through posture, breathing, diction, and resonant tone production.  The MHS Chorus performs throughout each school year in numerous school and community events.
