SPANISH 1 - 05120 - 1 CREDIT

Prerequisite: None

Credit: Language

Description: The level 1 Spanish class is an introductory course which is offered to students who may be studying this language for the first time, or did not pass the LOTE checkpoint A exam with a 65 or better and/or did not pass middle school Spanish 1 with a 65 or higher. Students will develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and learn a broad array of vocabulary in the target language. Spanish is presented in culturally relevant situations so that students become acquainted with the civilization, lifestyle and customs of the target culture. Students in the graduation class of 2005 and after must pass a language course to be eligible for a high school diploma.

Description: This course is designed to build on the broad vocabulary base learned in level 1 with great emphasis on oral fluency. The course is conducted largely in Spanish and its main focus is communication. Students learn to speak, read, and write in practical situations as well as creatively. Spanish is presented in culturally relevant situations so that students become acquainted with the civilization, lifestyle and customs of the Hispanic cultures. A school final will be taken in June.

SPANISH 3 - 05320 - 1 CREDIT

Description: This course is a continuation and expansion of the students' ability to communicate in Spanish. The course is conducted primarily in Spanish with a continued emphasis on communication and oral fluency. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are honed and additional grammar is introduced. Students learn about Hispanic cultures through primary sources including readings, discussions, films, music and individual research. The LOTE B Exam will be taken in June.

GERMAN 2 - 05230 - 1 CREDIT

Description: This course is designed to build on the broad vocabulary base learned in level 1 with great emphasis on oral fluency. The course is conducted largely in German and its main focus is communication. Students learn to speak, read, and write in practical situations as well as creatively. German is presented in culturally relevant situations so that students become acquainted with the civilization, lifestyle and customs of Germanic cultures. A school final will be taken in June.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT AND CONCURRENT COURSES

COLLEGE SPANISH I - 05440 - 1 CREDIT

Prerequisite: Spanish 3

Credit: Language

Description: This course will be conducted in Spanish. This course will include intensive college level grammar incorporating all syntactic structure in Spanish. Reading materials will include samples of Spanish literature, educational texts on Hispanic history, current event articles, as well as selected readings on various themes. Writing skills and literary analysis will be developed. Students will be expected to speak Spanish and are required to make frequent oral presentations to the class. Students who successfully complete this course, by earning a grade of C+ or higher and a grade of 65 or higher on the DCC final exam, may earn as many as 3 credits from Dutchess Community College at a reduced tuition. The DCC credits will be awarded in January. A local final exam will be given in June. One high school credit will be awarded in June for students who pass the course. Students will not be eligible to receive 1/2 credit for this course after completing only the first semester.

COLLEGE SPANISH II - 05527 - 1 CREDIT

Prerequisite: College Spanish I

Credit: Language

Description: This course will be conducted in Spanish and will continue to cover intensive college-level grammar incorporating all syntactic structures in Spanish. Reading materials will include samples of both Spanish and Hispanic literature, including short stories and poems. In addition, assorted articles of current political, cultural and literary significance will be discussed. Students will be expected to speak Spanish and are required to make frequent oral presentations. Students who successfully complete the first semester of this course, by earning a grade of C+ or higher and a grade of 65 or higher on the DCC final exam, may earn as many as 3 credits from Dutchess Community College at minimal cost. The second semester will focus on the study of relations between the United States and Latin America. Students will examine literature, film, and historical topics in this section. This course is a full year commitment. Students will not be eligible to receive 1/2 credit for this course after completing only the first semester. Students may register to take the Advanced Placement Spanish exam on a walk-on basis. COLLEGE/ADVANCED PLACEMENT GERMAN - 05235 - 1 CREDIT

Description: In this course, students examine cultural differences between Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the so-called DACH countries. Students explore how dialects, geography, cuisine, and sports influence regional and national cultural identity. Students participate in the international soccer competition, Bundesliga Total!; adventure through Germany via the online mini-series, Ticket nach Berlin; read the German novel, Ich bin hier bloss der Hund; and engage with several German-language films, including Heidi and Der Wunder von Bern. Because this is conducted in German, daily, active participation in the target language is crucial to student progress. The Dutchess Community College (DCC) course will end in January with a DCC final exam. The DCC final exam will also count as the high school midterm. Students who successfully complete this course at the end of Semester 1, by earning a grade of C+ or higher and a grade of 65 or higher on the DCC final exam, may earn as many as 3 credits from Dutchess Community College at a reduced tuition. The DCC credits will be awarded in January. A local final exam will be given in June. One high school credit will be awarded in June for students who pass the course. ADVANCED PLACEMENT GERMAN - 05537 - 1 CREDIT

Description: AP German is a college-level course designed to give high school students a strong background in advanced grammar and further improve the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will read classical and modern German literature and watch German films. Students will conduct independent research on German, Austrian and Swiss culture and gain a deeper understanding of European history and current affairs. All students are required to take the AP exam at the conclusion of this course. COLLEGE ITALIAN I - 05340 - 1 CREDIT

Prerequisite: Italian 3

Credit: Language

Description: This course will include an intensive college-level grammar review of all syntactic structures in Italian. Varied readings of prose and poetry from classical to contemporary literary movements will be included. Students will write college-level compositions and term papers dealing with cultural issues and current events. The class will be conducted in large part in Italian. Students will be expected to speak in Italian with relative ease and are required to make periodic oral presentations to the class. Students that successfully complete this course can obtain as many as 4 credits from SUNY Albany at a reduced tuition.

COLLEGE ITALIAN II - 05345 - 1 CREDIT

Prerequisite: College Italian I. Marist College requires an overall GPA of 85 or higher.
