The fighting in WW1 ended at 11am , on the 11th November 1918 when an armistice was called. This ended the fighting but it would take months to sign the Treaty of Versailles between Germany and the Allies, and years to decide other treaties.
The Paris Peace Conference
In 1919 the Allies met in Paris along with the defeated nations and empires to decide how the peace should be settled. They needed to decide on new borders for European nations, who was to blame for the war, and importantly, who should pay for it.
The Allies were led by the “Big 3”, Prime Minister of France, George Clemenceau, Prime Minister of Britain, David Lloyd George, and US President Woodrow Wilson. Each had different ideas about the terms of the treaties.
George Clemenceau wanted revenge on Germany for the loss of life and destruction of French property. He wanted land and large amounts of money and goods from Germany as reparations.
Woodrow Wilson wanted a peace that would “make the world safe for Democarcy. He proposed a 14 point plan which included creating the League of Nations, reduction of military worldwide, supporting independence for new nations, and not imposing a harsh settlement on Germany.
David Lloyd George was inclined to go along with Wilson but the British had also lost a large amount of lives and the British public were calling for revenge.
Ultimately the Treaty of Versailles would impose harsh penalties upon Germany and cause massive resentment from future German politicians and leaders such as Adolf Hitler. The Treaty of Versailles would be in part responsible for causing WW2.
